Stained porcelain necklaces with textiles tinted with natural dyes.

The first step was to dye the textiles for my necklaces. For this task, natural dyes were the most interesting option for me. These dyes are obtained from plants, insects and minerals. This last group includes oxides, which are also used to pigment porcelain (and ceramic pastes in general).

There were examples of stained biscuit (unglazed) porcelain goblets and amphoras, created in the early days of my family's factory.

Although it is a millenary technique, its popularity grew during the 18th century when Josiah Wedgwood developed what he called Jasperware, a combination of stained porcelain with white embossed appliques that mimicked the carvings of cameos. I had the opportunity to see some pieces of this style in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The technique of colouring porcelain requires great precision in the formulation since the addition of oxides alters the melting point, causing the pieces to tend to deform during firing. Since the formulation of ceramic pastes is not my speciality, I will never consider the possibility of working with coloured porcelain ... until I became interested in natural stains.

I chose to do the test with the beads for my necklaces. As they are very small, I would not have to worry too much about deformation problems. I decided to do the experiment in my own way, that is, without calculating the quantities exactly, which would prevent me from repeating the successful results.

And so I did, adding oxides to the porcelain body as if I were mixing oil paint. I modelled the same beads as always but with different stained clays with the idea of repeating the designs I had already developed. I couldn't imagine the enormous amount of possibilities that adding colour would open up for me.

Suddenly, a single shape became many different ones, thanks to the variety of shades. Paradoxically, colour led me to focus on the form. The harder I tried to repeat a design, new necklace ones occurred to me. This is how Onirial Color started, in an attempt to recreate the pieces of my first porcelain and cotton jewellery collection that mutated into the creation of new pieces. I also included glazes that added the extra dyad of contrasts between glossy and matte.

It is a series, since it is based on improvisation in the addition of mineral pigments what doesn't allow me to repeat pieces with total accuracy. Taking this quality as an advantage, instead of seeing it as a problem, I enjoy repeating the same designs in different colour combinations.

By relying on a preset design, I go back to exploring colour, experimenting with the combination of tones and shades. Going back and forth between shape and colour and matte and gloss finishings allows me to unfold the possibilities that open up in between the opposites. It is not about concentrating on one or the other but on focusing on interaction and integration.

On how I added colour to my porcelain necklaces and why I choose to use natural dyes over synthetic ones to tint the textile components.

Words and images: Cecilia Borghi

I started making necklaces almost without realizing it, while my hands modelled porcelain shapes as a distraction. And they were white but also of earthy tones, the colour of clay. Whenever I show them in public, I was faced with the question of why I did not make them in colours and sometimes I also wonder about that, but at first, I could only think about the shape. Maybe later I could start thinking about colour.

Cotton ribbons for my porcelain necklaces, treated with natural dyes extracted from avocado and onion skin, yerba maté and red wine.

I was not sure where to start. Buying ribbons tinted in bright hues seemed easy, but that idea did not convince me: what colours to choose? and why some and not others? Would I look for trendy palettes or concentrate on neutral tones? I felt the need to instil into this search the same organic approach in which I conducted myself during the process of modelling and design, to be reflective and aware of both the procedure and the results.

Five years ago, I began to experiment with synthetic dyes. I worked in my kitchen but I did not feel very comfortable using this material in the same place where I prepared food. But my kitchen was (and still is) the only place I have to dye.

Until I finally felt inclined to try natural dyes. And what did I know about natural dyes? Not much: that they are only a wide range of earthy tones, that they have low intensity and that fade easily. And researching a little (because it truly didn't require much effort to get some conclusions) I discovered that the previous statements were all false and, paradoxically, also true.

It is true that most of the colours obtained using natural dyes are soft or undefined if a small amount of dyeing material is used. As I would learn later, by increasing the amount of concentration and making good use of fixatives and intensifiers, the resulting colours can become very bright.

The easiest tones to obtain are those derived from materials such as avocado and onion skin, which deliver a beautiful range of browns. But they are not the only ones since you can get blue, yellows and reds using the right raw materials. The yellow from turmeric root is brighter and more beautiful than the one obtained using commercial synthetic dyes and although its intensity tends to diminish with the passage of time, its beauty is not lost but transformed, giving way to a softer shade.

Different dyes have greater or less resistance to fading due to exposure to sunlight or washing. But at the end of the day, they do not differ from the synthetic dyes that also suffer modifications due to the use and that is nothing more than a simple reminder of the passing of time.

The process of dyeing with natural dyes is long and laborious, requires attention and care and also involves collecting the materials and buying the rest of the elements required.

Cotton ribbons submerged in onion skin tincture for 40 minutes at 80°C.

The first step was easy, I simply tried to dip cotton fabrics in a mixture of boiling water with turmeric and vinegar, since I knew that everything turmeric touches stains it and does not come out, as it happens with napkins after eating a curry. And the yellow that I got was just beautiful. Although it was just an experiment, it helped me to ignite my curiosity and discover what else I could do from my kitchen.

After several trials and errors, I decided to take some dying lessons at Hebra Lab where I could appreciate the thoroughness with which Carolina faced the work of dyeing wool with avocado and onion skin and yerba mate. Her practical observations were very helpful, especially when it came to reflecting on what materials made sense to use and which ones did not.

There is a lot to explore, but in my case, exploration is not an end in itself, but a path through which to reach those colours that are functional to my work. Once obtained, I start to combine them with the glazed porcelain charms. My interest focuses on the treatment of the raw materials that, once together, will make up the final work that conveys an idea that it is imbued with each step of its creation. It is an object in which ideas have been applied and convictions respected based on effort and decision to carry forward an idea.

I wanted to reflect on the colour from an organic point of view. By this, I mean that my goal was to obtain a colour palette as a result of the process of manual work and research, instead of mentally devising it and then dedicating myself to finding each of the desired colours.

While I scanned the shelves of the wholesale store where I expected to buy different types of untinted cotton ribbons to make my necklaces, I could not help feeling the urge to buy rolls of many different bright colours.

But I was already determined to continue on the path of experimentation and reflection, which is more laborious but also more enriching.

The materials that I finally chose were industrially produced cotton ribbons and cords. Treating them with natural materials resignifies them by giving them a new status, that of valuable raw material. This approach interests me a lot and is aligned with my belief that industrial production is indispensable in the contemporary world, but it is imperative that it adapts to current reality, going from a model of overproduction, obsolescence and discarding to another focused on quality and the care of the environment. Inverting the process and returning the industrial to the area of craftsmanship to resignify it is my purpose.

What could have been solved in just a few weeks if I had been inclined to choose commercial coloured ribbons ended up a search that has lasted over a year. But I wanted to express myself through colour and that requires time and dedication.

To be an anemone

Locaciones: Parque Nacional Iguazú (Argentina) y Parque Nacional do Iguaçu (Brasil) - Febrero 2018

I drew some beings, maybe they were sea creatures or flowers, I did not know because they didn't have a context. I liked that, they wandered free in their own space.

I called them Anemones because were are a part flower, part animal since anemones exist of the two types. And at that moment I didn't think that both could have something in common: that they are fixed to a place, by the roots in a case, and by a pedal disk with which they adhere to the marine substrate, in the other.

But the attempts I outlined at first did not settle. Until, among the images for inspiration that kept coming as suggestions I found a drawing I had made a few years before called Inflorescence No. 2, an incipient cluster of floral shapes that seemed to rise together. That's how the final design came about, thinking of those flowers as if they were aquatic beings.

I called them Anemones because it was the name of the series of drawings I was working on. But the truth is that I didn't realize how appropriate the name was, not so much for the final image but for what they meant in my life at that moment.

Sea anemones are born and spend their entire lives fixed on the seabed or coral reefs. They are creatures who must procure their sustenance without being able to leave the place to which they are attached. So they take advantage of their tentacles, which they can only move with the impulse of the water.

Today I can see that I felt that way, fixed to a place, perched on a space to occupy myself and carry on without being able to go out and freely dispose of time.

I happily dedicate a large part of my day to my family and I use the means I find available to make my work cross the walls of my house.

But above all, I depend on something that looks like the impulse of water and that helps me find the energy and means to do it. It is the strength of will, which when it falters leaves me without nourishment, but when it is strong and intense it allows my tentacles to reach places I could never have imagined.

When we scheduled a family trip to Iguazu falls in the warm weather of February, we knew that heat and rain would be a constant during the three short days we had to enjoy.

Those who had already visited the area suggested that I take a raincoat or buy a disposable one available in the kiosk situated meters away from the waterfalls to protect me from water splashes.

But I was not interested in the idea of ??going covered with a vinyl coat or buying some fragile and disposable plastic thing that would not biodegrade for the next thousand years, out of respect for nature.

I wanted to get wet, to receive the greeting of the waters and enjoy the magnificent view of the Devil's Throat. It is there where the water explodes when falling from the heights and generates a white mist of drops that splash everything and where the power waters are perceived with greater force.
I ignored the advice I decided to wear only my cotton shawl with its stamp of anemones, a textile piece so simple and of infinite use that served as protection against the strong sun and that I placed on my shoulders once I walked back through the footbridge on the Iguazú River completely wet and happy for having

The consistency of time

Experimenting with printing at the litography workshop by artist Lorena Pradal.

Location: Aída Carballo Lithography workshop at Museo Ernesto de La Cárcova, UNA - February 2018.

One of the first things that Lorena explained to us was that the lithography ink has a much thicker consistency than that used for other types of printing. This would not be more than a technical fact, if it were not because, during the 18 hours (divided in three days) that the workshop lasted, the time also seemed to take another consistency.

My first lithography matrix made with greasy materials on a polished limestone.

We are ten students with more or less experience in the trade of engraving and we are in the lithographic workshop of the Museum of La Cárcova to learn about lithography, guided by the artist Lorena Pradal, who has imposed the challenge of helping us to materialize our work using stones as a means of printing.

The black ink is discovered in every corner of the workshop, in the stains that populate benches, counters, bottles and any other element that may be in view and not so much. That black colour, in addition, can be breathed. It has a particular smell that announces that one is entering a place not so common these days: a place where a trade is practised.

The ink is kneaded with a spatula to give it plasticity, it is spread on glass or marble and then stretched with the roller.

On the stones, we draw or paint. Greasy elements act as ink or pencil. Only the knowledge of the materials and the process will allow us to imagine the final result, which will be a mirror copy of what we have done on the stone. And the image will be duplicated as many times as desired.

Application of Arabic gum after drawing in preparation for the acidulated stage.

I had wanted to experience lithography since a long time ago. I had many expectations, I imagined myself leaving the intensive course with a folder full of copies. But that was not what I got. Although I left with several copies of my work, what made me feel satisfied was the feeling that time could also double, or at least expanded a little.

The talc is carefully spread using a rug. The acid is applied locally by brush on the Arabic gum layer.

The first task is indicated: to polish the stones. I raise my hand and offer myself immediately. The task is tiring but hypnotic: to rub a stone weighing about 15 kilos on top of another one, placing silicon carbide and water between them, which forms a paste that becomes thicker as the stones wear out and surfaces begin to be sensitized to receive the materials that will carry the images that one wishes to reproduce.

I begin to feel the fatigue in my arms, but the sound produced by the friction between the stones and the silica has a calming quality that helps me to continue drawing those infinity movements. Once the stone is ready and the final result is opaque silkiness, it makes me sad to mark it. The colour is not a minor thing, tones that go from light to dark grey and that denote the different hardnesses and antiquities of the stones.

Artist and teacher Lorena Pradal checking the prints obtain after rolling the stone in the press.

The next stage is for me one of the most difficult since it involves understanding the chemistry of the process to give proper handling to the acids and thus achieve the desired tonalities. My attention tends to wander after a few minutes (as it also happens to me when I have to face formulas of porcelain pastes or glazes). But luckily, several colleagues clearly understand the process. This is how the foundations of teamwork begin to take shape, that requires each participant to contribute the best they have, and if everyone contributes something different, the result will be richer and more complex.

Applying ink on the stone and then separating the paper from the matrix.

There are two printing presses, each of which requires a minimum of two people to be operated. The indication of group work issued by Lorena is followed by a quick distribution of the work by all the participants, as we propose ourselves for the different tasks so that we can all experience the process.

The stone is inked three times with a roller for each impression and a wet sponge is used between each roller pass to prevent the ink from adhering to surfaces that must remain clean.

In techniques such as engraving on wood or metal, the matrices require some inking work so that the successive copies are similar to each other. In lithography, where each print requires a minimum of three loads of ink and cleaning with water between each of them, the task is much more arduous and demands a trained eye to imagine the final result before seeing it.

Team work is essential in the printing stage.

Once the press gears have begun to move, the rhythm must be constant and the attention extreme since a simple mistake can lock the mechanism of the machine and take the printing session to a sudden end.

The adjustment of the pressure is done individually for each stone since the height varies between the different matrices. And my first copy, with some technical problems that can be solved by polishing and working in the areas that were not well defined.

For five hours we have the opportunity to see our engravings in stone to be transformed into prints, thanks to teamwork efforts. There are also frustrations but nevertheless, everyone has something to take away.

And when I say something, I do not mean a bunch of prints ready to be exhibited. I refer to the unparalleled experience of practising a trade and achieve a change in the flow of time, despite the constant sense of urgency that life in today world seems to impose. To give time a thicker consistency and decelerate it to feel calm and reflective is something I need and had the pleasure to experience.

Gestures
Gestos

A review of the images I created during the last ten years.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

Today, April 8, 2018, marks a decade since the day I decided to go out on my own to present my work. Along the way, I tried all kinds of strategies and I discovered materials that I prefer to work with and images that I end out repeating on different surfaces. Thus a kind of dictionary of gestures and elements was emerging.

Lines of Life from Gesture series. Indian and walnut ink and pencil on Schoellershammer paper 420 gr, 50 x 70 cm each panel, 2018.

Here is a list of the most reiterated gestures:

Perforations
Circular holes and openwork surfaces were the first traces that, a decade ago, already announced the intention to deepen surface treatments.
During the previous years, I had explored in the easel painting the contrast between planes of colour and areas worked in search of an own image, but I always lost myself in the literal representation of a subject without getting to highlight the plastic qualities of my work. That's why the change of medium was so important because it allowed me to concentrate on the gesture to generate meanings through it.
I drilled dozens of bowls that little by little were giving way to the objects that would be transformed into my first works in porcelain.

Petals
The gesture of the piercing found its opposite in the petals. The circles of clay that fell on the table with each action of drilling formed a sort of mattress of petals. Each circle a petal, many petals a flower. The floral motifs had a very particular resonance within me due to my personal and family history. And little by little they expanded from the porcelain to the paper that was covered with invented flowers in a profusion of petals of a variety of shapes.
When the gesture of piercing and the gesture of making petals mixed on the porcelain, I obtained small charms. Threading them in a cotton string seemed the most logical and consistent action to be taken.

Hojas

Leaves
Working with my hands in such a minimal format gave me the possibility to do an infinite amount of tests (which the larger formats do not usually inspire me and the lack of a proper working space appears to be one of the causes, but that's another story).
Pressing the paste between the fingers, I modelled different shapes that would then be combined into cotton strings. The petals changed into leaves with pointed edges. And once again I realized that the repetition of the same form/gesture, had great visual power and I started to thread several similar charms and secured them with knots.

Knots
The idea of end or death is opposed to the notions of union and strength. A knotted string, a powerful symbol, the components of a language (as used by the Incas in the quipu) and a decorative element used since antiquity (celebrated by the Celtic culture that transformed them into decorative motifs).
The knot is one of the gestures that I still explore in my pieces of contemporary jewellery which I chose to restrict (for now) to two materials as a challenge through which to discover the limits and try to figure the way to go further.

Threads
At first, it seemed inconsistent to change techniques and materials constantly, but then I realized that when a material imposes its limits and I can not overcome them, moving to a different one is like taking an alternative path that, eventually, will take me to the same place, giving me the chance to move on. So I first found the threads in the endings of the strings I use to shape the pieces of jewellery, and later, as lines that run parallel and do not seem to cross until a twist forces them to meet each other.
I really like the strength of this element so simple but loaded with meaning, especially if you choose to call it thread.

(Christov-Bakargiev, Carolyn: Arte Povera, 1999, Ed. Phaidon, p.42-43).

During all these years the constant in my practice has been the manual work. I always choose to do the work myself, regardless of whether contemporary art admits (and in a certain way encourages) outsourcing in manufacturing the work. The hand is my main tool and allows me to preserve a human scale by devising objects of modest proportions.

The words with which Luciano Fabro outlined the seminal ideas of the Arte Povera movement reverberate in me:

A new logic of detail can offer the means for the development of the human spirit in the world. To discover the order of things, to determine their essence not for inert contemplation, but for their useful secondary properties… To induce causes from the effects that are felt. To sharpen the tools of the spirit and extend through the new tools, the power of the hand, to prolong one’s body in all the things in the world...
(Christov-Bakargiev, Carolyn: Arte Povera, 1999, Ed. Phaidon, p.42-43).

Creating objects that because of their size can be easily manipulable helps me to understand the world from my own place, face the abyss of the immeasurable and give it a measure, bring it closer to my hands and in some way, transform it. They are objects that relate to the quotidian, designed to live with us in our living spaces.

That friction of my work with everyday life leads me to intuit that it inherits its spirit from the decorative arts. In his book The Sense of Order, E. H. Gombrich addresses the applied arts from different points of view trying to delineate their characteristics states:

The impulse that moves the decorator to continue filling all resulting voids is generally described as horror vacui, supposedly characteristic of many non-classical styles. Perhaps the term infiniti love, infinite love, would be a more adequate description
(Gombrich, E.H: The Sense of Order, 1979, Ed. Phaidon, p.80)

Each one of the reasons that I am developing is repeated and accumulated until it mutates into something new. It is the repetition that reveals the next gesture. And in the dialogue that I establish with materials, a limit or constraint is generated that demands to be overcome. It is at this point that the road opens (only for those who are willing to see it).

Infinite love tends to overcome all constraints. The same noble desire that moves the artisan to subjugate the material also makes him expand the confines of inventiveness.
(Gombrich, E.H: The Sense of Order, 1979, Ed. Phaidon, p.82)

The gesture that I choose to repeat helps me to think and reflect on the world, creating a plastic universe resulting from an invented language. Each repetition carries the gesture of new meanings and with each work, it takes on a new dimension, adds meaning and becomes a mean of comunication.
