A gesture of one's own

I wrote a text about things I learnt at the Fine Arts school but I had never fully understood before. I think the task of writing them down helped me to comprehend them better.

One day, a future friend (yes, at that time I didn't know that we would end up being friends, but happily so it happened) contacted me in her search for learning new techniques, even being a professional illustrator.

The answers to the questions that Nati from Aguais Art sent me by mail for me to put together a class for her were materialized in the form of a text that I gave her early this year when we finally met in person because nothing is better than being face to face in times of social networks.

El gesto propio por Cecilia Borghi / A gesture of one's own by Cecilia Borghi
Gestures as marks, a moment in my practice.

I spent the whole year rewriting the answers for each of those questions or concerns, and during all that time I was wondering what was the use of going around with the same text if I had already handled it to my new friend. Now, 12 months later, I found the answer: I rewrote them for myself, to understand what I had once studied by heart just to pass subjects at art school.

This is how El Gesto Propio (A gesture of one's own) was born, a face-to-face workshop that I hope to be able to run with some frequency next year, and this text that I want to share with you today is a compendium of the content that I share in the class.

El Gesto Propio, taller dictado por Cecilia Borghi / A gesture of one's own, a workshop by Cecilia Borghi
During the workshop, participants experiment making marks with a diversity of materials.

A gesture is an impulse that expresses something. The graphic gestures are those scribbles that we repeatedly draw in the margins of notebooks. My proposal is to try to identify those gestures that can be a starting point from which to begin to define our interests and translate them into art.

Observing Nati's work, it occurred to me that it made no sense to take her away from her aesthetics to convey a specific technique, but quite the opposite, to focus on her own work, in its essence.

El Gesto Propio, taller dictado por Cecilia Borghi / A gesture of one's own, a workshop by Cecilia Borghi
Same material, different results as every participant get to express themselves.

The most beautiful thing about all the story I try to tell you today is that Nati approached me with her doubts and concerns to end up becoming my friend and mentor, listening to my own doubts and convincing me that what I had put together for her could be useful to other people.

I had a hard time giving the text and the workshop a final form since I felt that none was good enough. And by encouraging me to present it at Puentestudio, the space that she runs along with blogger friend Vicky Fernandez from Almacén Felíz, allowed me to understand that we all have something interesting to contribute and that it doesn't have to be perfect but genuine and sincere.

Bird series
Serie Aves

Locación: SACH San Telmo, Estados Unidos 300, Buenos Aires - Diciembre 2019

The story of how a shape turns into another.

There's someone who always brings me feathers that gathers from the street. Most of them are pigeons and grey in colour, but every now and then it happens that she finds one with a white or brown spot.

And suddenly that common feather becomes completely special by having something different from the others

I think of the birds that wear those feathers, and I focus on their bodies, which may be bulky but never too heavy. It seems that the secret is that their bones have cavities that make them light.

I look at my necklaces. I imagine that the porcelain charms are the feathers and that the textile is the bones.

Meanwhile, my next challenge at work is this: to create a series of one-of-a-kind necklaces to be displayed into a carved wooden showcase at SACH in San Telmo district, a boutique specialized in antique and design objects forming an eclectic mixture of striking artefacts.

The display case is still empty so I imagine what it could contain: pearl necklaces, black gloves, faceted glass boxes, a hat with feathers.

SACH San Telmo - PH: Cecilia Borghi

I continue kneading small bits of porcelain and shaping them into beads resembling leaves to create my necklaces. With each repetition, the leaves are transformed into something else. In the background, I can hear the television on with a documentary about birds and their courtship dances.

While I squeeze the little balls of clay between my fingers, stories about exotic and flashy birds come to my ears, with plumages that I would never have imagined: fine feathers like wires with a circle on the tip, feathers of a bright red or white and fluffy.

As if they were the pieces of a great puzzle of which I lost the final image, I observe all the beads I modelled, which have already been returned from my family's workshop where they were fired. At the moment they rest in cardboard boxes, carefully classified by shape and colour.

I open the drawer, take out my threads dyed with vegetable dyes and start threading and knotting, without being very sure where I want to go. Amid the tangle of knots, something is being configured and I notice that if I adjust it more, it becomes an object that stays together and firm. If I'd passed a ribbon over here and another over there, maybe I could finish my necklace. And thus it happens.

I obtain larger pieces but not for heavier, since the weight is distributed over a larger surface. I find that I can compensate the weight of porcelain with a larger textile surface.

And the leaf-shaped charms are starting to look different. Now I see them as feathers

This is how this new series was born, and I should say that it's usually how all my works begin, in a kind of random way that it's not such, since the elements that conform them usually are fluttering around me and also within me long before they take a definite form and are associated with a certain idea or concept.

Traces of ink

Ink is a material that has been used for thousands of years and its most well-known varieties are Indian ink, composed of a variety of fine soot and sepia, originally obtained from a mollusc but nowadays manufactured with a combination of synthetic and natural materials. It was created to draw lines and refers to calligraphy.

The ink leaves its mark on any surface it reaches, including the back of the sheet when it passes through the paper. It is the perfect material to deepen the gestural aspect of drawing. That is how I began to investigate the characteristic marks that each person tends to draw and that are repeated throughout life. I called these graphics "gestures" for their ability to convey sensations thanks to their level of synthesis.

When I was invited to create a special set of works for Merecido Home Decor, I suggested making a series of small-format inks that express the spirit of this store dedicated to design, decoration and art with an emphasis on decorative details and craftsmanship.

My proposal was risky as I had no way of producing an example since each drawing would be born from an unpredictable combination of variables: the type of paper, the thickness of the different brushes, the drying of the ink, but above all, the gestures that I would express while drawing.

I spent time chatting with Maria Eugenia Daneri, founder of Merecido, about what she wanted to convey with this collaboration. We talked about her taste for travelling, printed textiles and the objects she finds in her trips. I imagined her on a ship loaded with treasures.

When I asked her about her favourite colour, she took one of my ink drawings, turned it over and pointed to an inkblot on the back of the work. It was a tanned purple-pink hue and displayed a beautiful range of transparencies. I love this, she told me.

During the drawing sessions in which I traced the 20 inks, I had in mind that purple tone and its variations that refer to corals, algae and crustaceans, to create a seascape as exquisite as a unique printed textile.

I repeated the different motives I imagined in my head tracing ink marks on the paper. With each repetition, the motif mutated and with each mutation, it was transformed into a new image. I observed the curves that flow easily when the water makes its way to the brush and I delighted with the shapes the ink drops make when they fall unexpectedly on the paper. The particular details that emerged with each new drawing helped me to make my way through the thick white fog that is the blank sheet of paper.

Phaidon, p.80 y 82.

The gestures I choose to repeat helps me think and reflect. Each repetition loads the gestures with new meaning and gives them a new dimension. Each gesture becomes the vehicle of an idea. Each idea is manifested with time and care.

In the action of expressing my world with preciousness, my work inherits its spirit from the decorative arts. In his book "The Sense Of Order", E. H. Gombrich addresses the applied arts from different points of view and trying to delineate their characteristics states:

“The urge which drives the decorator to go on filling any resulting void is generally described as horror vacui, which is supposedly characteristic of many non-classical styles. Maybe the term amor Infiniti, the love of the infinite, would be a more fitting description.
(...)
Amor Infiniti tends to overcome all constraints. The same noble eagerness that moves the artisan to subjugate his material also makes him expand the confines of the invention ”

Gombrich, E.H: The Sense Of Order, 1979, Ed. Phaidon, p.80 and 82.

My commissioned series for Merecido was titled "Seaweeds" and resulted in new drawings and ideas. Working on the details helps me to face the abyss of the immeasurable, to give it a measure, to bring it closer to my hands and somehow, to transform it. Each brush stroke is a distillate of condensed emotions that turns ink stains into graphic gestures.

Meeting with colleagues to dialogue through art.

Location: Entre dos patios Studio

Since April I'm attending the monthly workshops coordinated by performer and textile artist Nilda Rosemberg. I have known Nilda for 4 years now and I have always liked how easily she connects with other artists and the way she thinks, always so open and inclusive.

Until now I had never been able to participate in her classes but this year we finally found a modality that could work for me and I joined, along with Ceci Fernández, artist, textile designer and passionate embroiderer, to the monthly workshops. During the meetings, we share our textile research, small experiments that speak of our curiosity about different types of materials and the development of small-format work.

It was in this context that Nilda suggested that we apply to participate together at the 5th Textile Encounter at Umbral Espacio de Arte and we were selected.

But her suggestion was not a simple call to show what we were doing, but a bigger challenge: she asked us to generate dialogue through our work. She noted that, although the materials we use are different, our approaches are quite similar, since we both refer to the body, either as a topic or support for our art.

So we put our things on the table (embroidered objects and tinted fabrics) and we took our materials out of boxes and bags (threads, beads, drawings, porcelain and metal pieces). We observe and exchanged ideas. Nilda proposed taking the meeting to another level, merging our works but maintaining our personalities. She wanted us to respect our individualities. She asked us for dialogue, not confusion.

A table in the patio became the stage, a white cloth, the meeting point. Ceci's hands moved constantly, calm and safe. They placed objects in different places and combinations. I realized that she manipulates things as if embroidering. I placed our small works on other settings (walls, windows, plants and doors). Once the time was over, we returned everything to the boxes and retreated inside the house to discuss the new connections we discovered in our pieces.

From that moment of dialogue arose the work we created about the encounter of the different and the search for coincidences and points in common in the wide space of textile.

Diverse materials linked by threads (beads, yarn and porcelain charms) intersects with the warp, granting an individuality to each of the objects. The variety of techniques and materials enriches the work and opens up the possibility of new ideas and solutions.

The inclusion of objects of diverse origin (a personal diary, branches and bark, clay, leaves, glitter and glass containers) introduces the idea of  time, presenting different moments of making that invites the viewer to imagine the journey from the idea to the creation of the object, a path that is never linear or predictable. The dialogue between all these elements would be the hinge that allows us to think about possible futures.

Origins and destinations

Thinking about the products I use to create my work and what happens with the discarded material.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

Thinking about my role as a consumer and the destinations of the things I discard became a habit for me since, in 2011, I read the book "The History of Things" by Annie Leonard, who spent a whole decade studying garbage in different countries.

Mine was not a drastic change, but a gradual one. Nor was it something imposed, but it emerged from a genuine interest in understanding my relationship with the things that surround me, given that my job is, precisely, to create "things.

Sea flowers. Pencil, ink, dyes and wall paint on paper, 2019 (detail).
Flores marinas.

It didn't take long for me to realize that this new way of thinking about the things I buy also affects the things I produce. I began to pay attention to the origin of the supplies I work with and observed that:
  - they are produced industrially (cotton cords, linen, pencils, inks)
  - they come from other countries (papers, paintings)
  - they are a product of mining (porcelain, glazes, graphite)
  - they are derived from petroleum (acrylics, wall paint).

This was not new data for me, what changed was the way of seeing them in this new mindset which reveals that production is not sustainable because it alters, contaminates and damages the environment. The truth is that at first, all this information was overwhelming because I did not understand how I could improve this situation.

Today, after many years of reflecting on it, I understand that:
  - the only way to modify production in an industrial system is through the industry itself
  - the responsibility for the management of natural resources belongs to the State
  - the small changes I make in my way of life are not going to save the world, but they are going to change me.

Drawing with graphite pencil on an ink stain before applying wall paint to shape the final image.

This personal change that, once started, is difficult to stop. It is also the germ of commitment and support for large-scale change. Thinking about the origin of the art supplies led me to review my training as an artist.

I studied painting and oil technique was required to pass exams. This is an exquisite technique but also quite complicated to work with in shared workshops, given it requires a lot of drying time. To overcome this problem I experimented with a variety of materials, from acrylics, wall paint and egg tempera, to chalk and charcoal cakes. I discovered that I liked working on paper and that it bothered me to have to work on canvas and the preparation process it requires. Finally, I was inclined to paint with acrylics, a polymer derived from petroleum, a kind of plastic made paint, which dries fast and contains the promise of durability.

But despite all its wonder, the acrylic never managed to conquer me and at the end of my studies, I left the painting to return to the drawing and tried my luck with the porcelain. Then I discovered the ink and from there to the tinctures there was only one step. Experimentation with natural dyes attracted my attention and suddenly I felt there was no going back.

The frustration of not being able to modify the origin of my art supplies translated into the care to choose them considering their quality and composition and taking into account their final destination.

For centuries, the artists aimed to create lasting works using materials that withstand time stoically. My desire instead is to create works that are gentle with the world where we live. I still cannot modify the industrial origin of the materials but I try to take care of my way of working, avoiding waste.

The only trace I drag from my earlier practice is the latex paint that I use to create plain colour backgrounds of my drawings. This material is a wonder that allows to waterproof the walls of our houses, keep them dry and give them durability. But it cancels the biodegradability of the paper I use as a support, transforming the remaining material into garbage. I still haven't found a good material to replace it, but I keep looking, thinking and questioning myself. Always.

The drawings that illustrate this text are the product of this process of change and reflection. They were made for a commission, a way of working that also reflects the care and respect that you can have when creating something thinking about its destiny.

I was always very attracted to both fauna and marine flora but I think it was the porcelain with its own qualities that led me to develop pieces that refer to the sea, I imagine that if I had chosen to work with red clay my creative universe would have turned out differently.

But for a reason, I chose porcelain, which is a very appreciated material with its own history in my family (my grandfather founded the Borghi Porcelain factory that my parents later directed until its closure).

That marine quality of porcelain, reminiscent of the texture of seashells and corals and the blue glaze achieved by reduction firing by my father in the kiln he built himself and the glazes that he formulates with care and that allows me to use so kindly, make my flowers transform into sea creatures.

Stones, the porcelain installation near the fire area.

That's what Colombian textile artist Carolina Salom saw in my work. She is currently based in Argentina but lived in other places, including Low California, which informed her work "Seaweeds". She invited me to present my porcelain pieces along with her textile wall hangings for an installation specially designed for the interior space of Clandestino restaurant whose motto is "land, fire and sea".

Despite working with different materials and having developed our own aesthetics, our works complement each other perfectly, infusing the restaurant's main room with a marine spirit that provokes our imagination to make us believe that we are inside an old wooden ship, enjoying a unique meal cooked in the heat of the flames and charcoal.

How to draw as in dreams

Many years ago, while talking with friends, the question of how to get to sleep in cases of insomnia arose. Today, that memory seems to speak about the way I create my drawings.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

I remember sharing my way of fighting insomnia. In the dark, I would close my eyes and think of images somewhat delirious. Allowing the absurd images to chain each other up, would give way to real dreams that happen somewhere in our brain and processes the issues of our day in a way that is also absurd and mainly visual.

Perhaps these instructions could also serve to explain how to draw, or rather, how I draw.

Two papers stained with ink and wallnut dye show the first traces of my drawings.

When I draw, I keep my eyes wide open but let my mind go as far as possible as in dreams. I start by staining the piece of paper that I've chosen to work with. Sometimes I take advantage of discarded previous works. In the last case, I turn the paper so that the previous drawing does not appear intelligible.

I want to clarify that, thanks to this custom, my classmates at art school used to joke saying that I reused papers to not spend money buying new ones (and that was partly true, but not the only reason).

Once I found images in the ink stains, I connect the pencil marks in both papers.

A blank page presents an infinite number of possibilities, while a stained or marked sheet places me in a certain scenario. I like to imagine stained paper as a land, a surface where I can guess traces of something earlier and those same marks capture my imagination and conjure images, like those absurd visualizations that lead me to the dream.

I repeat a certain design over and over to create an area of interest.

So I begin by thinking about the kind of images I see and trying to figure out what the marks suggest to me, what features they have, what colours, what lines, etc. The resulting graphics will emerge from a kind of dialogue with all that is already there, a limited series of elements with which to start working instead of infinite possibilities.

Dibujo por Cecilia Borghi / Drawing by Cecilia Borghi
Inspired by the eucalyptus bark colour palette, I add more details to the details.

When starting a new drawing this way I allow myself time to observe the surface, I rotate the paper, or place it on the floor and walk around it until the marks begin to reveal something, a shape or an image, as when we look at the clouds and see horses or boats or a familiar face. When the image appears I act quickly, draw a line and then another as when sketching. But the full image never reveals to me in one go, it's a slow process, like a puzzle.

The plain background helps me to reveal the final image.

I continue to add details patiently. An essential tool at this stage is the eraser, as it allows me to remove everything that interferes in the image but never completely, so the previous layers are still perceptible and add volume to the final image. I also use matt paint as an instrument to mask areas and highlight a subject.

Line by line.

When is the work finished? Well, it would be like in dreams where we do not choose anything, it just happens and we wake up when we are about to unveil the mystery. Same when drawing. At some point, I step back to see how it goes and there is this image, one that perhaps I had never imagined but I like it and it intrigues me.

I feel the work is finished when it suggests but does not say everything, just like in dreams, when you see something interesting and want to get closer to observe it better but suddenly everything becomes blurred, or we go away involuntarily while we believe that we approach. The work is finished when not everything is said, when there is still space for those who observe can imagine their own picture.

The flow of images

My way of entering the world of art was thanks to porcelain. I became familiar with this medium when I was a girl because my family owned a porcelain factory. This material allowed me to start building my own work and a personal aesthetic, and it was not by chance.

Childhood is a moment of our lives in which we experience the world with new eyes and everything is surprising, a time when we are free from the prejudices and mandates of adulthood. By touching the soft paste of porcelain I can not help but go back to my childhood because touch is a primitive sense (like the smell) and allows memories to be triggered quickly and images to emerge.

To find your own voice sometimes you do not have to invent it but to recover it, to rescue it from those places where it was hidden, covered by endless layers of knowledge and instructions. The porcelain returned me to my childhood.

In the attempt to discover the possibilities of the material I explored different techniques, including the construction by casting in which slip is used, a liquid version of the porcelain paste that serves to create weightless pieces. Pouring the slip inside the plaster mould allows creating light and fragile shapes that deform very easily. After years of practice, I learned to manipulate them while avoiding accidental deformations. And when I had achieved it, I felt I had erased all the expression marks of the objects that I created.

I believe that each mark tells a story so I decided to leave the moulds aside and experiment with the slip alone, drawing on plasterboard as if I was using paint. From that to ink there was only one step. Water, an element present in both media, was the key.

Unlike in my years of study, when I tried to have everything under control to comply with each exercise or requirement of my teachers, this time, I did not care about perfection but what the water does and the trace left by the ink. Having experienced before, so blithely, with slip was what allowed me this new approach.

My challenge now was to let the ink speak without drowning my voice, allowing my own story to flow through it and become visible. Chance reveals the potential of each material and presents us with the possibility of expressing its beauty through our work. I found in ink an appropriate means of expression. So I let myself be carried away by the water.

As I write this text I observe, from the corner of my house where I am sitting, the stain of humidity that advances, slowly but surely, on the wall that I tried to waterproof for so long, without any success. And I never cease to be surprised by the number of sensations aroused by the same element, the one that I associate with the most absolute peace (floating) and the most extreme terror (drowning).

When choosing materials such as porcelain or ink, I'm also choosing an element, water, that awakes all sorts of feelings. And water-based mediums are very different to oil-based ones such as oil paint, a material that you have to learn to stretch and push because it does not have the fluidity of the water. Even when in its diluted version it produces water-like drippings it does not have the surface tension of the water, that which keeps a drop perfectly in place and allows the ink to settle slowly.

The images that illustrate my words are the photographic record that I achieved a rainy morning of the year 2017 while making gestural inks. I keep these works as references of what I pretend to find while working with inks.

When I feel lost about my work, I always go back to water-based materials as they take me back to my path.
