"Cecilia Borghi rethinks the decorative: her glazed porcelain pieces are so exquisite for their textures and nuances as disturbing for their lush organic growth. Her drawings of nocturnal gardens, hanging porcelain gardens with floral designs reminiscent of underwater life and Phoenix, a set of ovoid shapes invaded by germs of life in perpetual regeneration, form a fascinating baroque universe."
Sylvie Argerich, director and curator at Sputnik Gallery, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1976.
As a child I used to spend my days playing with my siblings at my granfather's porcelain factory.
That was where, later, I learnt the techniques to transform clay into porcelain pieces.
I studied Fine Arts for nine years, during which I studied drawing, sculpture, engraving and specialized in painting.
I also took classes in photography, silkscreen and pottery.
For a few years I also studied literature at the University of Buenos Aires, discovering the marvels of Spanish medieval Literature.
I lived for a time in New Zealand, my husband's country of origin, a faraway island in the South Pacific with surreal flora and fauna, a place where every house has a garden and sometimes even a vegetable patch.
The birth of my daughter closed the cycle that gave meaning to everything, going with her to the workshop, surrounded by porcelain, as my mother did with me, and my grandmother with my father.
That circular space, those invisible walls, delineate the imaginary garden that I seek to materialize through my art,
a place where memories mix with fantasy to become tangible.
I'm interested in the garden as a refuge and also as a mythological place where nature is present but moulded by human hand and mind.
Today my work spreads into drawings, paintings, collages, one-off porcelain pieces, installations and designing objects that I craft by hand, as I learnt in the place where, as a child, I used to play.
