Materiales

Tienda Patrón in Buenos Aires invited me to make a window display showcasing the elements I use to create my jewellery pieces in porcelain, cotton and silver.
It will be on view during May.

PORCELAIN

I model each bead by hand, using stained porcelain paste. I fire the pieces in an electric kiln at 1225 ° C.
They will then be threaded in cotton and linen cords.

TINTES NATURALES

NATURAL DYES

I use vegetal dyes to colour the cotton and linen textiles that I use in my necklaces and bracelets.
My favourites are the dyes that I prepare by myself, based on onion skin, stone and avocado peel, yerba maté and pomegranate peels.
I put these organic materials in water to macerate and then boil them to obtain the dyes that, through mordants such as baking soda and vinegar, allow me to achieve a wide colour palette.

LINEN AND COTTON

I work with linen and cotton-based textiles, which I treat with soy milk before dyeing. Then I boil them with the chosen natural dye until I achieve the desired colour and intensity. In addition to the dyes I make myself, I also use artisanal powder dyes, such as indigo, sandalwood and blackberry leaves.

TEXTIL RECICLADO

RECYCLED TEXTILE

I use recycled textiles to make fringes. I unweave the fabric, removing thread by thread and undoing the weft, to leave the warp on view. These patterned fabrics reveal colours and sometimes images and add an extra texture dimension to my jewellery.

PLATA

SILVER

To create my earrings with porcelain beads, I use sterling silver. I make wax models that will then be transformed into metal by the lost wax method. Each piece is finished and polished individually.

Creating each piece is a process that takes weeks and a lot of time for research and creative work.
Each of them is made with effort and respect, thinking about the characteristics of each material, working in small quantities, choosing the least aggressive and polluting processes (as far as possible) and thinking about the use and destination of each piece.

My jewellery will be affected by use and time. It is my wish that dressing them becomes an experience, and that time transforms them, just as it also transforms us.

The ideas

Watching a short documentary about Miyao Miyazaki, I see him displaying his notebooks and commenting that most of what he writes or sketches is discarded. Because he doesn't take these notes to do something with them, but considers it a way of processing ideas.

Words and images: Cecilia Borghi

I have lots of notebooks with notes and drawings that, in general, I do not use directly in my work. Although I always keep them. Everything I pour into the notebooks is a raw material that must be digested. And that kind of digestion is slow. It's a process that takes time.

Because ideas are not something that comes out of nowhere. Ideas need elaboration, they need to be prepared with care to finally become intelligible.

At some point, something of everything that has been dumped on the pages begins to take shape, begins to resonate in me, keeps spinning in my head and reappears frequently in new notes. Until the day comes when it makes sense, I understand it, I visualize it. The time has come to unfold it.

That's why for me, the idea is never at the beginning, but something that happens in the middle of the creative process, and even at the end, when what I'm working on takes a definitive form. It is in that last instance that the idea crystallizes.

And if it turns out that I suddenly have a concrete idea to work on (such a thing has rarely happened to me) it is because I worked on that idea before, even if I would not have done it consciously. Because everything I release in the notebooks scatters, moves and remains latent.

I can't help but see ideas as flowers. I like to imagine them as artichokes, that are flowers, and also food, with their tender and nourishing heart hidden under many layers of hard thorny petals.

You have to dare to defoliate it little by little. But first, before you even start defoliating it, you have to cook it. So those initial fruitless efforts that all artistic activity requires are not useless, they are just the necessary cooking that will allow us later, little by little and slowly, to remove the petals to finally reach the tender centre.

Anyway, I want to make it clear that what I like most about eating artichokes is scraping with my teeth the hard, thick and well-cooked petals. And observe how they pile up on my plate. Just as in my work, in the notebooks.

The most revealing moments and the ones that I enjoy the most are those when I have dirty hands, when I am in the middle of the work of plucking the petals. When in that slow dissection and swallowing, what I have in front of me is transformed into food. When in the mess, I can suddenly imagine the flower of the artichoke. When in the part, I see the whole.

Temporal

COMMUNITY

"Companion plants are plants that grow well together by shielding each other from the elements, offering sacrificial protection from pets, or enriching the soil by trapping nutrients. Often plants that grow well together taste good together: basil and tomatoes thrive in similar conditions, and grow in sympathy with each other too. (...) Probably the most well-known, and certainly the most venerable, companion plants are the 'three sisters' - squashes, beans and corn - which have been grown together by subsistence farmers in South America for thousands of years. The corn provides a structure for the beans to climb, and the beans fix nitrogen into the soil to feed the squashes. Companion plants are often very unlike in their pairings, but they go to build a community, which is what a garden is."

PACIENCIA

"Crecí rodeadade plantas. (...)

PATIENCE

"Growing up I was surrounded by plants. (...) Plants have taught me patience in a world that moves at the speed of light. You can't will a plant to grow, or tell a tree to bend. (...) Last spring, I went back to my mum's allotment for the first time in eight years. Like many other people across the world, flung into a chaos, I hadn't seen my family in months because of the pandemic, and the cold chill of isolation had really kicked in. In line with the lock-down rules, somewhere outside was the only place I could see my mum. Of course, we chose the allotment. (...) The allotment was more magical than I recalled. Everything was alive and unpredictable. (..) I still have so much to learn about gardening, and a lifetime of lessons to be taught from plants. Everything sits at the end of our fingertips through our phones and technology. But this past year, more than any other, gardening has shown me that instant satisfaction isn't always what I need. It's time for me to practice patience."

DELEITE

TRUST

"I wish I'd known, long before now, that sowing is a way to grieve.
As hands scatter seeds into earth beneath feet, they are really sculpting loss.
With careful, repeated movements, the hands are moulding it into a thing like light on stone.

***

I wish I'd known, long before now, that sowing is an act of trust.
That the body, as it sows & plants, when it tends land, as it hopes for growth,
gives itself over to a vast & shifting future it could never, in that moment, quite imagine.
I wish I'd known that to sow is to scatter light around, like wee fluttering moths."

CONFIANZA

* Luz en irlandés.

JOY

"I shall never have the garden I have in my mind, but that for me is the joy of it; certain things can never be realised and so all the more reason to attempt them. A garden, no matter how good it is, must never completely satisfy. The world as we know it, after all, began in a very good garden, a completely satisfying garden - Paradise - but after a while the owner and the occupants wanted more."

Jamaica Kincaid - The garden I have in mind

CULTIVARSE

UNDERSTANDING

"Gardening, then, is a practice of sustained noticing. And though it should go without saying that open, natural space is something everyone should have immediate access to, gardening itself is not about having a garden. It is not about growing food or flowers but instead about developing our sense of how ecosystems work - and working with, not against them. And since no plant necessarily needs human help to grow if the habitat is right, it seems to me that gardening is less about growing plants than it is about growing your own understanding of how they best live. In which case, the garden is you."

Victoria Adukwei Bulley - What we know, what we grow at the end of the world

A new edition of the Latin American International Ceramics event.

Location: Avellaneda Ceramics School in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina - MAY 2022

Almost three years have passed since the day I received an invitation to participate in the 14th International Symposium on Ceramics in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires Province.

At first, I thought it was an invitation to enjoy the event that would take place in May 2020. But, to my surprise, it was a proposal to participate as an exhibitor.

The entrance to the school, the venue of the event.

The proposal was to spend a week doing my work in the beautiful ceramics school in the municipality of Avelandea, surrounded by talented colleagues and in the company of teachers and students from the institution.

The pandemic changed the plans and we had to wait until May 2022 to see this great event come true.

On the first day of the Symposium, we met in the school's auditorium to toast together with colleagues from Argentina and Latin America, with caipirinha served in glazed porcelain cups, courtesy of the Argentine-Brazilian artist Fernando Poletti, who was the artist with whom I shared a classroom with for six busy and entertaining days.

It was with him that I spent the first hours of each day talking and sharing anecdotes, knowledge and experiences, as colleagues and artists.

Our talks covered his research on his technique for modelling the human figure on ceramics and his concern for environmental problems in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), his current place of residence, especially those related to the contamination of freshwater sources. We also shared stories about our family origins, the awakening of our vocation and the daily dedication to our work with ceramic materials. Each theme led us to meeting points and reflection that helped me finish imagining the work that I wanted to create and that would be incorporated into the school museum.

And it was those talks that were repeated in other workshops, in fleeting visits during working hours, visiting the ceramicists who, like me, dedicated an entire week to display their work before the eyes of a knowledgeable, curious and generous public, colleagues who made each talk a pleasant and enriching moment.

My proposal for the event was to make two pieces of jewellery in porcelain and cotton, using porcelain paste prepared and fired in the school.

The most important thing was to be able to display the diversity of techniques that I use in my work and to create a piece that would account for my aesthetics and artistic research.

The biggest challenge was organizing my work in such a way that the different stages of my labour could be appreciated.

With the help of Cecilia Ojeda, the organizer of the event, we organized for firing the porcelain pieces in the middle of the week, to have time for assembling the porcelain beads in front of the visitors.

The visitors explore and share their experiences with exhibitors.

Once the schedule had been established, I focused on preparing the textile pieces and organizing the materials that I would need during the working days: tools, pigments and sketches.

In addition, during the Symposium days, we would display previous works so that those who visit us could appreciate our work in context and learn about our aesthetics and artistic research.

The initial tension gave way to concentration and the pleasant work of the workshop in action.

The days went by between the satisfaction of manual work and the festivity that aroused with every new encounter, moments cherished after the hard times of the pandemic and confinement. It was an invitation to share and celebrate.

Every day we began our work in the stillness of an almost empty school that hours later was bustling with curious visitors of an expert eye. And all of a sudden, everything was flooded with a festive spirit that remained intact throughout the 6 days of workshops, talks and presentations.

The works I made, entitled Water Roots N° 1 and N° 2, belong to the Uprooted series that I have been developing since 2021, in which I imagine each piece as a plant taken away from the soil that seeks a more favourable destination in which to thrive.

A big thank you to the entire IMCA community that organized this incredible event, with an impressive level of attendance: people from all provinces and neighbouring countries came to the school to experience a week full of ceramics. And a special thanks for inviting me to participate in an event organized by and for public education, which is the most important tool to build a fairer world.

The seeds for a better future are being sown today by public education.

Traces of the past are revealed in dreams.

Cover artwork: Noise. Natural inks, pencil and chalk pastel on cotton paper, 100x70cm, 2021.

I hear from my window the noise of traffic and people on the street. It is a monotonous sound, quite annoying at times, although I have gotten used to its more strident expressions, such as the shouts of some passerby enraged with the drivers or the siren of the firemen.

Street noise has a kind of physical presence. Sometimes I imagine it as a strident being who lives with me. Others, it works as a time machine and transports me to the neighbourhood of my youth, a place crisscrossed by highways and constant traffic.

Side roads. Mixed media on paper, 70x50cm, 2021.
Colectoras.

I also think of noises as images. I take my homemade inks, my pencils, some old chalk pastels, and trace lines on the paper. Curved, interrupted, rough or perhaps dynamic lines.

From the conjunction of all these marks, abstract landscapes emerge. They evoke Buenos Aires suburbs, those places that still live within me, from which I never quite left and that reappears in my dreams in the form of endless bus trips, colossal highways and wastelands.

.

The lines circulate the colour and transform it into streets, wires, grass, vacant lots, shutters, abandoned buildings.

The colours extracted from the avocado peel and seed and the onion skin carry the pink and orange hues of the fiery Buenos Aires sunset skies. The dry greens of yerba mate and the toasted grey of walnut overturn the shadows that obscure the crossings of the bridges with their massive columns.

Wasteland. Embroidery on linen and natural dyes.

The curves reveal the restless pulse of the hand and the interrupted forms echo the comings and goings of an urban project that seems never to have been entirely clear.

But it has, nevertheless, a particular imprint that is inscribed in the broad cement avenues without signs and in the sheds that follow one another with their vast metal shutters, generating dystopic landscapes.

Small embroidery. Cotton and natural dyes.

In some corners, the garbage accumulates as if some magnetic force attracted it. The trees suffer vice prunings until they lose their shape and shade. On the broken sidewalks, grass and weeds grow freely, and in the puddles that form in the streets, waiting tiredly to be repaired, the black graphics of the tangled power lines are reflected.

The sidewalks serve as a desert setting for the cultivation of huge agaves that creates strange contrasts when compared to the low houses.

In commercial areas, signs accumulate layer after layer of posters and advertisements. And the bus stops are barely advertised with a humble sheet metal screwed to a lamp post. In the chalets of yesteryear, the gardens are still carefully cared for, enact despite the pass of time.

AMBA necklaces and bracelets. The name AMBA refers to the acronym Metropolitan area of Buenos Aires.

Each of these details is recorded in a sleeping place in my memory, which awakens suddenly when I hear the noise of the traffic. They turned into images that I seek to capture on different media, using a mixture of industrial materials (such as cotton cords, threads, paper and clays) and others made by me (pigmented inks and dyes).

It is also an opportunity for me to experiment with other supplies, to be faithful to the inconsistency of the Conurbano area.

Conurbana series is the tangible expression of my effort to reconcile myself with a past place and moment. It is an excuse to review memories and sensations that are not always comforting. It is remembering dreams. It is imagining realities. It is to allow myself to rewrite my own story.

I feel every landscape I capture e is incomplete. But I believe that in that lack lies its accuracy as if each one were a thin layer that I shed from my memories. Perhaps one day, all of them together, will be able to reflect on that place that marked my memories.

I'm happy to announce that two of my necklaces have been selected for the III Bienal Latinoamericana de Joyería contemporánea within the frame of the "Abran cancha" contest. The proposal was that we search in our work for the elements that infuse it with its South American essence.

Selected: Uprooted 1 and 3
Seleccionadas: Desarraigadas 1y 3

The Biennial is organized by Argentine jewellers Paula Ísola and Laura Giusti from the Joyeros Argentinos collective. It opened last Tuesday, August 17, and it is the first to be broadcasted simultaneously so that it can be accessed from all over Latin America and the world. It is also the first with venues throughout the entire continent: simultaneous activities and exhibitions will not have a single territory as a stage, but several cities will showcase locally in person and globally in virtual the work of their artists, making it even more Latin American.

The jewelry contest for this edition is named "Abran Cancha" (open up the playing field).
Cancha is a word of Quechua origin meaning playing field, an aboriginal word, such as canoa (canoe) and maiz (corn), huracán (hurricane) and colibrí (hummingbird), cacao (cocoa) and poncho. The dominant Spanish language was not enough to name everything, and thousands of words from the different American cultures were incorporated into the Spanish language that spreads through the continent and the world. The same happens with Brazilian Portuguese, with words like oi, tapioca or toró. Our original cultures are manifested in our Latin American identity through our language (among many other things), in the same way that our Latin American identity sprouts in our work.

The two works I presented are titled Uprooted 1 and 3 and were made with hand-modeled stain porcelain beads, cotton cords dyed with natural dyes, and recycled textiles. Each piece has fringes-roots that hang from each necklace-plant. They are looking for a new soil to continue growing.

I feel that, an experience that we all Latin Americans share is that of uprooting:
- that of the original inhabitants of our continent displaced due to the persecutions and massacres perpetrated by the colonizers.
- that of Africans enslaved and forcibly transferred to our lands.
- that of the immigrants who arrived escaping from wars and poverty.
- that of Latin Americans themselves fleeing dictatorships.
- that of the inhabitants of these lands who cross the borders in search of work.

I am a descendant of Italians. From them I inherited the craft of ceramics and sewing. In my pieces there are thread and porcelain, which I seek to harmoniously unite in a construction where each part, despite its differences, contributes something of its own to the whole.

Lightening the weight

When answers are found in the making.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

Almost all my series of works begin unexpectedly.

I don't usually plan them in advance, I just understand that I am working on a topic long after I have started elaborating it, without consciously thinking about it.

This is me doing something that characterizes me: if I stare at a thing for a while it means that I am thinking about how to change it. On the right, the AVE N ° 9 necklace with porcelain and stoneware charms and a hand-twisted cord. It is available at SACH San Telmo online store.

Working with different materials is also a way of finding knowledge. A sensory reflection allows us to understand things through our senses, instead of doing it through logical reasoning.

Sight and hearing are the privileged senses of our time. However, for me, touch and smell are constant sources of images and ideas.

Bird N° 4 necklace available at PATRÓN Concept Store and raw beads ready to be fired in the kiln at 1250°

Something that I have been working on for a long time is in creating a feeling of lightness when wearing my necklaces.

It might seem like a contradiction to create bigger pieces and try to make them lighter. But it is possible to achieve this if we focus on the sensations. My intention is to generate the feeling of lightness in relation to a big volume.

Here is the Bird N°8 necklace available at SACH San Telmo, over a fully printed dress. On the right, a mini-feather.

Although the intention was there and the results were happening, I still had to understand how this search could be expressed in my necklaces.

I had been working on necklaces with lots of beads and wide strands for a long time when the word BIRDS came to mind. The catalyst was an invitation to display some pieces in an antique wooden and glass display case. And that word got stuck in my mind and it sounded right to me, even though I wasn't yet sure why.

The Bird N°5 has an opening disguise in the front. The cotton cords that shape mi pieces are sowed by hand and also using a sowing machine.

Reading about birds I learned that some of their bones are hollow, which gives them lightness and allows them to take flight beyond their size.

Porcelain is a dense material and the inclusion of large-format charms in a necklace often makes it heavy. But I imagined that the solution could be in the textiles. So I began to experiment with different ways of assembling the parts to achieve textile pieces that distribute the weight evenly around the neck and generate a certain sensation of lightness.

Porcelain beads, cotton cords and recycled textiles next to the Bird N°11 necklace, available at SACH San Telmo.

Weight distribution can be achieved with wide and flat textiles that mould to the neck and rest on the skin instead of furrowing it.

This type of support also has its own weight which causes a certain fall backwards, compensating for the weight of the porcelain beads on the front and distributing the weight gently over a larger surface.

And finally, here I am, loading the kiln bead by bead. On the right Bird N°1 necklace, available at SACH San Telmo.

Discovering a way to work on bigger necklaces without neglecting the experience of dressing them was very important to me since I am interested in creating art objects that feel alive.

I want my works not to be inert things but to become an experience. I wish that they are lived, that they change, that the passing of time and the use affect them, mark them and wear them out. And most important, that they leave memories on who has chosen them. Because being able to accept the idea that change and finitude are neither good nor bad, but a constitutive part of our lives, is also a way to get rid of a lot of weight.

Onirial revisited
Onirial revisitada

Reinventing: rethinking something, looking at it with different eyes, giving it a second chance, taking up an idea, developing it, taking it further.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

I did that with some of the first porcelain necklaces that I designed for my first porcelain jewellery collection, launched in New York City in 2016 at Mad About Jewelry.

The collection included necklaces of different lengths, bracelets, and earrings, all made out of hand-made porcelain beads with crystal glaze, threaded on white cotton cords. I titled it Onirial, an invented word that sums up the concepts of oniric and surreal.

I had spent four years testing different combination possibilities for these two materials (porcelain and cotton) and created two limited series of ten necklaces each when curator Bryna Pomp contacted me to invite me to participate in the annual contemporary jewellery event that takes place annually at the Museum of Art and Design in New York (MAD).

The proposal was to create a complete collection that included a variety of items. I spent the following months imbued in that task.

The idea behind the collection was to create pieces that combine the simplicity and resistance of cotton rope with porcelain, a material that carries the ideas of sophistication and fragility.

It was a challenge that I approached from a plastic perspective, concentrating on the character of the materials and on achieving as many combinations as possible with few elements.

From the porcelain beads I modelled based on the elements that usually appear in my drawings (leaves, petals, seeds, and scales), I generated a variety of compositions that resulted in pieces of asymmetrical style, striking for their size and of delicate sobriety because of the different shades of white.

The experience of presenting them live in a space dedicated to an audience specialized in artistic and contemporary jewellery gave me the unique opportunity to interact with visitors and listen to their insights. Some visitors believed that my necklaces were made with seashells due to the organic appearance of the charms.

The smallest pieces were appreciated for their versatility. The largest pieces were chosen by collectors and three of them (part of a series entitled Harvest) were selected to participate in the exhibition Bigiù in Salerno, Italia.

Having created a complete collection made me curious to continue experimenting and discovering new possibilities, concentrating on the morphology of the necklace.

I incorporated vegetable dyes to add colour to the cotton, mineral pigments to colour the porcelain, and reduction glazes to add shine and shades to the charms. However, such a variety of elements tends to disperse my attention, that's why I always go back to the beginning and dedicate myself to continue creating new designs in white.

Orilla (shore) took me back to the memories of shells piled up on the sand by the waves.

From a formal point of view, I wanted to give importance to the textile component with a wide cotton and linen band. It distributes the weight over a larger surface giving lightness to the piece and also works as a visual counterpoint to the porcelain.

The Pétalos (petals) necklace was one of my first designs and I personally enjoy wearing it on all kinds of occasions. I reversed it adding an asymmetry in the combination of charms that gives it a more interesting appearance.

.

Satélites (satellites) is a nod to traditional pearl necklaces.

I decided to compensate the large size of the porcelain beads with more space in the thread, resulting in a set of white shapes that seem to revolve around a centre of attraction that, in this case, is occupied by the wearer's body.

Finally, with Raices (roots), I chose to go in a more abstract direction. However, anyone who has seen a succulent stem take root in a glass of water will be able to understand the image I was trying to capture.

Cylinder beads give it strength, knots add mobility, and cotton threads escape towards the ground.

Story of a factory

A trip back in time to the place that marked the story of my family.

Text: Cecilia Borghi

I was invited by Verónica Yías from Idearios Potters School to participate in their series of IG talks with ceramicists. She was especially interested in me telling the story of my family's factory, Borghi Porcelana and generously offered me the chance to make a short video to share pictures, facts and anecdotes.

Borghi Porcelana was founded by my grandfather Fermo Borghi and operated from 1953 until its closure in 2010 in Buenos Aires Province. My parents, Cristiano Borghi and Cristina Gargiulo took care of the management of the company since 1974. That was the place where I grew up as a child and learned the different tasks that lead to the creation of decorative porcelain and ceramic pieces.

The video has a hundred historical images of the factory, has audio in Spanish and lasts 25 minutes.

Intuitive sketches
Bocetos intutivos

Sketching from the stain allows the ideas or images that I have in my head to appear little by little instead of forcing them.

Text and Images by: Cecilia Borghi

This image reminds me of chapter XIII of Michael Ende's Never Ending Story about Perilin, the night forest.

I had no plans to draw it, but I read the chapter recently and the image appeared while I sketched. Drawing from the stain is a strategy that always helps me sketch, especially if I feel lost or uninspired.

Lots of blank paper to sketch with ink.

Difficulty starting to stain a sheet (or starting modelling a sculpture, etc.) often resides in not being able to find a starting point. It is usually easier when having a previous sketch and an idea of what we want to achieve with the work to be done. But this way of working does not suit everyone.

In my case, I worked many years from previous sketches that I made in the workshop of the school of fine arts on the days when we had a living model. But I began to realize that if there was no model or I didn't have a photograph at hand to copy, I couldn't draw anything. After some time and many attempts, I found a way of working that was much more interesting to me. I call it intuitive drawing.

In this type of practice, more expressive or free, the lack of a sketch guide implies a commitment to start working without knowing exactly where we are going. But marking a sheet of paper without any preestablished intention usually causes the impression of being about to ruin the support.

In my student days, the solution I found for this problem was drawing on previous works that I had discarded. When I had nothing to start with, I asked my schoolmates if they could let me use their discarded works that they did not want to keep. Eventually, I used new papers that I scribbled with pencil or pastels for an initial stain or patina.

Then I proceeded to look carefully at those marks trying to imagine something. This exercise is similar to what happens when we look at the clouds and see shapes in them. At first, I had a hard time finding images but with practice, it got easier. When I managed to visualize something I started chasing it with my pencil making marks that then I would add colour.

An important point to find the images is to change the orientation of the paper to lose sight of the previous drawing that is still latent. This action forces the eye to create new relationships between the stains and will spark our imagination.

I took advantage of this hack for many years, the only drawback was the lack of quality of the papers I used. It became a problem when it came to framing or selling my jobs.

So today I prefer high-quality papers on which I stain with ink before drawing. Once the marks are made, I let them dry and I then proceed by moving the sheet in different orientations until images begin to emerge. I continue to add details with a pencil before going to colour.

Gestural drawings (as I call this technique that comes from the stain instead of coming from a specific idea) is the starting point of my sketches, but also a way of connecting with my work when I feel that I'm not inspired. The simple act of scribbling with ink on paper suggests images that gradually become ideas.
