The path that drawings make from my imagination to the paper usually has many twists and turns and sometimes, unexpected resolutions.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

The latter was the case of the Shadows series, an idea that was flourishing in my head but wouldn't yet coagulate on the paper. Tests and trials always left me with the idea of something else.

Until one day, Kenia from Pulso told me that she needed small-format drawings so I took the opportunity to describe my idea for this new series: drawings with black ink, like the shadows that are drawn on the wall on summer days with clear and sharp edges.

During the preparations, I felt like filming the process and had everything ready but the day I had to start it started to rain and my workspace became darker than usual. I hesitated about whether to start filming or not, as the low light would result in a low-quality film but in the end, I decided to use a reflector to illuminate the table. And suddenly all the things in the room began to project their shadows and the idea finished forming.

Most of the time there are lateral situations like this one that end up defining a project, chance playing its role.

The following days I continued painting and filming, always keeping the room in shadow, barely illuminated with a reflector to preserve the context of shadows and images forming on the walls.

The 15 drawings that composed the first works of this series of 17.5 x 12cm included individual envelopes made out of tracing paper and the certificate of authenticity extended by Pulso and were sent together in a small cardboard box with a black bow.

I firmly believe in the value of small things so I try not to neglect any details and let them speak for me.

Serie Sombras

There are sometimes on the side of the shadow as interesting truths as on the side of light.
Maurice Maeterlinck, The Intelligence of Flowers (1907).

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

The shadow that hides and conceals, the shadow that draws on the white walls that burn by the summer sun.
The shadow that invents silhouettes on the floor, the shadow that always walks alongside ourselves.
The shade refreshes and protects the fragile life that would perish under the robust ray of the sun.

I live in an old and dark house that insists on avoiding the solar brightness hiding behind the neighbouring buildings.

It is a humid and fresh place where the days pass quietly, in happy contrast with the sounds from the outside that enters loudly, almost as if the rumour passing through the windows leaves no place for the light to come in.

The plants I had died, exhausted from so much effort to catch the beams of light that messily filter after bouncing suddenly on the metallic surface of the cars.

But other plants arrived as more stubborn and resistant species that appreciate the lack of light as one who discovers the calm of nocturnal silence.

The vegetal specimens who do without the glare and live their days in the still of the dark do not seem to need much because they have the wisdom to take advantage of what is given to them.

I appreciate the gloom and its recesses, the suggestive of its essence.

Shade is a series of drawings of 17,5 x 12,5 cm on 420gr Schoellershammer white paper in which the ink expands forming full and dense areas in the surface of which the graphite makes its way, fine and discreet, drawing dark marks that gleam when touched by light.

For this series, I chose to make a video in the exact place where I sit to paint and draw.

On an old rustic wooden table that belonged to the porcelain factory of my family, I display my materials and work calmly. The concentration leads me to forget for a while the hours, the marks and brushstrokes dissolve the time.

Introducing a new series of one of a kind hand-crafted necklaces in pigmented porcelain and cotton thread tinted with natural dyes.

I started to create jewellery almost unintentionally, or rather inadvertently because I had already received proposals to collaborate with Argentine jewellery artists but I had always declined them because I felt that I was unable to model pieces of porcelain in such tiny sizes. In fact, I had decided that I would never make jewellery.

But it seems that my decision had not been as firm as I thought and it ended up becoming a possible path when the factors of space and time conspired to transform my work routine. I discovered that to model small pieces I did not need a workshop but just a table and two or three simple tools. I could also work at any time of the day taking advantage of gaps in between different activities.

Since I entered into the world of art jewellery I only used porcelain and cotton cord, two materials that in this context are perceived as simple and rustic but to me, they are very attractive, mainly for the sensation that they produce to the touch.

I dedicated myself to exploring the form, the combinations and the contrasts of texture maintaining the monochrome, a challenge that I imposed myself and enjoyed knowing that it was a good way to emphasize a quality that historically distinguishes both: whiteness.

It took me over a year to find a new aesthetic on which to work and a palette to develop. A whole year of trial and error, insecurities and certainties.

In the end, I could see that if I wanted to differentiate my new pieces from the previous ones I had to change something that was notorious at first sight but at the same time keep some features that referred to my previous work. So I decided to change colour. And at this point, I saw two possibilities: choose a palette and investigate how to apply it to the materials or see what colours could be obtained with the addition of dyes and oxides and figure out a colour scheme with them. I decided on the second option which I found more intuitive and random.

Thus I achieved blue, brown, spotty grey and pink clay mixing indefinite amounts of oxides and pigments in porcelain paste. Later I dyed strings in different shades of beige and bright yellow with vegetable scratches.

The shapes of the charms were inspired by a visit to the museum of natural sciences. Standing in front of the lustrous and petrified bones of the dinosaurs I marvelled at those structures that look like cathedrals built of such small and varied components. And the beasts themselves enjoy a certain mythological halo since its appearance is not known with certainty and the constant scientific discoveries only reinforce this idea granting them scaly skins to later remove them and give them feathers and naming them predecessors of the birds.

Inspired by the vertebral column and skeletons, I modelled articulated beads to which I added perforations to give them lightness and a certain decorative touch that distanced them from the merely descriptive.

Another detail I worked on in this new series is the frayed thread. I like to work on finding a way to hide the joint of the rope but now I wanted to show something that suggested fluency and looseness and why not some uncertainty, if thinking of them as loose ends. At this point, I would like to mention the novel The Bone People by Keri Hulme as a subtle influence on the materialization of these jewellery pieces.

I feel that I discovered a new aesthetic that brings together elements related to nature and literature that allows me to create objects that fully reflect their qualities when they come into contact with their ideal support: the human body.

More than a year and a half ago I began to read a book about the Arts and Crafts movement (by Rosalind P. Blakesley) that, at some point I interrupted. But last night I finished it and I liked to remember the reason why I had chosen to read it: my interest in manual work. And there, just at the end was what I hoped to confirm in the voice of someone who studied it in depth:

Here, we encounter more subtle ways in which Arts and Craft's ideals continue to infiltrate our lives. Key attempts to address some of these problems - the practice of fair trade, for example- echo the Arts and Crafts identification of quality products with healthy lifestyles in localized communities. (..) On a more domestic level, there has been a resurgence of the Simple Life ethos in the actions of those who choose to leave the rat race of high paid and high profile careers to seek a better quality of life in the country. Such changes often involve abandoning desk-bound occupations which used the head, in favour of doing things by hand (..). Thus the theology of the Arts and Crafts - that a better environment can lead to better products and a better way of life - continues to have an impact on the way in which we manage our world and run our lives.

It is very interesting to observe how artistic and social movements are prolonged in time and engender new ones nourishing them of their principles. Although I do not believe that what is happening today is a continuation, I agree with the author that there are still artists who, in isolation, produce works that echo the main guidelines of Arts and Crafts (especially those who inscribe their work in the search of a revaluation of the autochthonous as a form of identity).

This movement had a great expansion since it manifested in different forms in distant cities of the world and also counted on a strong political transformation associated mainly with the inclinations of William Morris.
Taking into account that today the situation is different there is however something that is repeated at the beginning of this century and is the need to return to the manual, away from the machine, but no longer as a reaction to industrialization but to the advance of technology and I think, ironically, to the comfort that has grown in recent years to levels never known before.

In the last decades, our daily life was transformed by the use of electronics that allows us to be in contact with the world while sitting at home, services evolved to the point that it is not necessary to go out to buy basic things like food (or just about anything else we need) and through our screens, we have access to constant entertainment.
The home furnishings also reached futuristic levels and with a few clicks, we get food ready and washed dishes.
While concerning the outside world, public and private transport evolved and expanded in such a way that we can go from distant points in minutes and comfortably seated.
The result of all these advances is that we are faced with the need to perform physical activities more frequently to keep our bodies healthy as we have lost the habit of movement due to the sedentary life behind desks and screens.
But some understand that isolated solutions do not work because what happened to us was a drastic change in the way of life that offers us everything at hand but that, despite the predictions, does not make us happy.

It is there where manual labour reappears and takes a central role because it is one of the characteristics that distinguish us from other species and that makes us human: the creation of tools, the preparation of meals, the construction of complex structures. Our hands are not only made to push buttons.

One of the goals of the Arts and Crafts was to improve the daily life of people making it easier and more comfortable, convinced that it would lead to a better standard of living and happiness.
They focused first on the objects to extend these principles to the architecture. Hence Morris's famous phrase "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful" that today is resumed but from another point of view, no longer in the rejection of industrial products as opposed to the artisanal but to the excess produced by the consumer society that led us to fill our homes with useless things not because they are not well made or don't work or are not aesthetically beautiful but because we possess them in excess and never get to use them. So accumulation became a problem in obscene contrast with the huge amount of population in the world that still today has not solved their basic needs.

The accessible luxuries that we enjoy today turn against us by enclosing ourselves in habits of indiscriminate consumption that do not make us happier. Thus many become conscious and little by little they are thinking about solutions and revising the past in search of alternatives that we could reconsider.

This is where the Arts and Crafts reappear with its ethos of practical, simple, and happy everyday life or "The Simple Life". The focus goes from the inside out, from home to city, from object to building. They reconsider some of the extreme actions that founders of the movement took to implement their principles, such as abandoning urbanity to go to live in the countryside in search of that agricultural world that they saw disappear and in which they believed to see the solution to all problems of their time. I do not think that abandoning cities or rejecting technological and scientific advances is the solution to our problems (in fact I think it would only cause new ones), but I do think that we need to reconnect with what makes us human, our hands, and use them to recognize our environment and to understand the world not only with the intellect but also with the senses. To manufacture objects and elements, to plant, to cultivate and to perceive the world through them, to touch and to feel its consistency.

Another expression of these ideas can be found in the Slow movement and its emphasis on the slow life as a way to undo the passage of life and to reject the homogenization provoked by the progress of globalization by focusing on the local as a way to improve the quality of life. Its main manifestation has occurred in what is known as Slow Food or slow cooking as opposed to fast food or junk that symbolizes the consumer society and seeks to rescue traditions and take them to a new level to enable people to build their own identity. Knowing where you come from one can then think and choose where to go.

There was a specific issue that led to the devaluation of the Arts and Crafts movement and it was the idea that it was a retrograde and medievalist current that simply looked at the past and romanticized it without appreciating the wonders of modernization.
Morris indeed rejected in his practices the use of the technology of his time advocating for a return to activities as they had been known in medieval times as a way to regain a bond with the past (the craft) that risked being lost forever.

Thus one of the initiatives in the midst of the Industrial Revolution was to set up a manual textile stamping workshop with hand-carved wooden blocks. The result was the production of beautiful and costly fabrics due to the work required.
But although an initiative like this failed to meet all the points of the program that had been imposed (one of them was that the products had to be accessible to the working class) today it has enormous value as a testimony of trade and also the effort to try to understand, in a physical way (and not only intellectual) how life had been in the past to find solutions to problems of the future.
This point is of great relevance today as its prognosis has been fulfilled and much of practical knowledge has been lost and traditional crafts are disappearing, which represents not only an invaluable loss for society but also the annulment of traditions and identity.

Thus we could know that to return to the technologies of the past was not the true solution but that being able to understand how the things we use are made helps us to leave the alienation generated by the industrialized society.
A similar principle was taken by the Art Noveau movement, which has many points in common with Arts and Crafts but, in my opinion, its main feature was of aesthetic character since its unit was based on the creation of a new aesthetic according to their time, while in Arts and Craft the coherence was given by the objectives of social character.

But today we also know that consumerism is not the way and that industrialization and technology do not lead us to happiness if they don't have a genuine interest in human needs and are not aimed at the well-being of people but they rather limit to profits regardless of the costs.

That is why I think that the response to the Arts and Craft movement 150 years after its emergence is in actions that lead us to lose some comfort to rediscover our world and the way it works, everything that makes us aware.
Perhaps it is no longer about just looking for the beautiful and useful, but also the strangeness that makes us think and opens our eyes again.

Sometimes the solutions are so simple that we can not see them. Reconnecting with the place where we live requires nothing more than desire and imagination. But by this, I do not mean to think of manual activities as mere distractions from the routine and relievers of the stress but as ways of thinking and of focusing, of gaining awareness of our actions and our power as individuals.

Every action however small has value, as each brushstroke leaves a mark.
Doing is also a way of reflecting. It is not a question of doing it right, but of doing it. Using the hands should become a daily and necessary action, not as a way to stop thinking but as a way of thinking involving the senses.

I encourage you to leave for a while all prejudices aside and perform simple tasks whose sole purpose is to enjoy the time and the pleasure of doing it without thinking about the results.

Secret life of flowers
Vida secreta de las flores
Dibujos por Cecilia Borghi / Drawings by Cecilia Borghi

Dibujos por Cecilia Borghi / Drawings by Cecilia Borghi

Drawings where relationships between beings and things change as they meet or move away.
A space without a supportive surface and composed of light objects that seem to push up or fly. Or just simply flow.
The background is a curtain sometimes opaque, others translucent, that leaves room for the observers to add their own point of view.
An interminable and interchangeable puzzle, as a world in a constant transformation that accepts and invites change.

Secret lives of flowers series are composed of duets of drawings that can be combined from any of its sides. In this way, they can be placed together in a horizontal or vertical position and will always form a slightly different image each time.
They do not have a right side and the signature is done in a circle to open the range of possibilities by adding new combinations.

I refer to them as duets and not as diptychs since each one works perfectly well when set individually and the idea of combining it with another is simply a way of offering a playful possibility to reflect the changes that transform our lives.

The shape of the flowers

Working while looking inwards, concentrating on what goes on inside, paying attention also to the internal part of the forms that I make.

In 2009 I made my first series of Flowers in which I would continue working for five years and would result in several works that included them. It was at that time when the concern for working the interior instead of concentrating only on the outside arose (though working the external aspect in the first series made sense since it was a volumetric reinterpretation of floral decorations commonly found on porcelain pieces).

I began by trying different ways of modelling the inner side in such a way that it could be appreciated to the naked eye but that the observer felt the need to look more carefully nevertheless. Fenix, Venus and Garden of the Hesperides were three of the results.

In 2015 with the work Red Anemones I opted for diminishing the applied details and glazed all the pieces in a single colour. So my exploration of the plastic possibilities of the interior continued through the glaze.

The bowls from the Iris series were based on the same idea as the pieces from Distinguishing Marks but highlighted the poetic side instead of focusing on the technical aspect.

It was then when I began to enjoy the irregular spots and slight iridescence from the glaze that turned a simple and symbolic form into small jewels with the potential to become objects worthy of the rituals that nourish daily life.

It was about taking a step further and matching the complex shapes with the exuberant colours. I knew that the result could be too overwhelming or confusing, but my main concern was that I thought that I was not creating anything new but resting in the certainty of having found a formula.

I don't believe in recipes for art because even if we use the same technique with the same materials over and over, we will always arrive at a different place if proceeding with sincerity and dialoguing with the work instead of forcing it towards a certain path.

Although I was not completely sure I decided to give it a try and the result surprised me for good with a range of pieces spanning from simple forms with few details that highlight the idea of container and content to other more complex where ornate and surface treatment are tightened with colour enhancing manual work and appealing to more careful observation.

Finally, the series is composed of 23 Flowers to which I decided to call that way simply because I believe that they are a continuation and also a sort of evolution of those first floral pieces. The aggregate in this case are the seven Forms that accompany them, all inspired after my work Rockery.

The group ended divided into three parts:  the first one currently on display at Tokonoma Art Gallery; the second, which will be exhibited as an installation along with other artists works; the third, a selection that I decided to keep for myself and not display or present for the time being.

It was the decision to keep some of them that led me to solve my great concern. Of the works I made over the past twenty years (porcelain, drawings, paintings, objects and jewellery), only a few of them stayed with me, because they never found the owner or they were damaged and a few because they represented something new that I discovered and I felt the need to keep them as a reminder of the satisfaction that results from constant work and effort. And those findings are the point of arrival of a long road but also the starting point for a new journey.

This time my conclusion is that originality lies not only in the outcome but also in the choices that lead to the final product. The work is not something that arises out of nothing, it is a construction that results from the union of work, reflection and the will to commit to present a personal vision of the world.
