Many years ago, while talking with friends, the question of how to get to sleep in cases of insomnia arose. Today, that memory seems to speak about the way I create my drawings.

Text and images: Cecilia Borghi

I remember sharing my way of fighting insomnia. In the dark, I would close my eyes and think of images somewhat delirious. Allowing the absurd images to chain each other up, would give way to real dreams that happen somewhere in our brain and processes the issues of our day in a way that is also absurd and mainly visual.

Perhaps these instructions could also serve to explain how to draw, or rather, how I draw.

Two papers stained with ink and wallnut dye show the first traces of my drawings.

When I draw, I keep my eyes wide open but let my mind go as far as possible as in dreams. I start by staining the piece of paper that I've chosen to work with. Sometimes I take advantage of discarded previous works. In the last case, I turn the paper so that the previous drawing does not appear intelligible.

I want to clarify that, thanks to this custom, my classmates at art school used to joke saying that I reused papers to not spend money buying new ones (and that was partly true, but not the only reason).

Once I found images in the ink stains, I connect the pencil marks in both papers.

A blank page presents an infinite number of possibilities, while a stained or marked sheet places me in a certain scenario. I like to imagine stained paper as a land, a surface where I can guess traces of something earlier and those same marks capture my imagination and conjure images, like those absurd visualizations that lead me to the dream.

I repeat a certain design over and over to create an area of interest.

So I begin by thinking about the kind of images I see and trying to figure out what the marks suggest to me, what features they have, what colours, what lines, etc. The resulting graphics will emerge from a kind of dialogue with all that is already there, a limited series of elements with which to start working instead of infinite possibilities.

Inspired by the eucalyptus bark colour palette, I add more details to the details.

When starting a new drawing this way I allow myself time to observe the surface, I rotate the paper, or place it on the floor and walk around it until the marks begin to reveal something, a shape or an image, as when we look at the clouds and see horses or boats or a familiar face. When the image appears I act quickly, draw a line and then another as when sketching. But the full image never reveals to me in one go, it's a slow process, like a puzzle.

The plain background helps me to reveal the final image.

I continue to add details patiently. An essential tool at this stage is the eraser, as it allows me to remove everything that interferes in the image but never completely, so the previous layers are still perceptible and add volume to the final image. I also use matt paint as an instrument to mask areas and highlight a subject.

Line by line.

When is the work finished? Well, it would be like in dreams where we do not choose anything, it just happens and we wake up when we are about to unveil the mystery. Same when drawing. At some point, I step back to see how it goes and there is this image, one that perhaps I had never imagined but I like it and it intrigues me.

I feel the work is finished when it suggests but does not say everything, just like in dreams, when you see something interesting and want to get closer to observe it better but suddenly everything becomes blurred, or we go away involuntarily while we believe that we approach. The work is finished when not everything is said, when there is still space for those who observe can imagine their own picture.
