Onirial revisited
Onirial revisitada

Reinventing: rethinking something, looking at it with different eyes, giving it a second chance, taking up an idea, developing it, taking it further.

I did that with some of the first porcelain necklaces that I designed for my first porcelain jewellery collection, launched in New York City in 2016 at Mad About Jewelry.

The collection included necklaces of different lengths, bracelets, and earrings, all made out of hand-made porcelain beads with crystal glaze, threaded on white cotton cords. I titled it Onirial, an invented word that sums up the concepts of oniric and surreal.

I had spent four years testing different combination possibilities for these two materials (porcelain and cotton) and created two limited series of ten necklaces each when curator Bryna Pomp contacted me to invite me to participate in the annual contemporary jewellery event that takes place annually at the Museum of Art and Design in New York (MAD).

The proposal was to create a complete collection that included a variety of items. I spent the following months imbued in that task.

The idea behind the collection was to create pieces that combine the simplicity and resistance of cotton rope with porcelain, a material that carries the ideas of sophistication and fragility.

It was a challenge that I approached from a plastic perspective, concentrating on the character of the materials and on achieving as many combinations as possible with few elements.

From the porcelain beads I modelled based on the elements that usually appear in my drawings (leaves, petals, seeds, and scales), I generated a variety of compositions that resulted in pieces of asymmetrical style, striking for their size and of delicate sobriety because of the different shades of white.

The experience of presenting them live in a space dedicated to an audience specialized in artistic and contemporary jewellery gave me the unique opportunity to interact with visitors and listen to their insights. Some visitors believed that my necklaces were made with seashells due to the organic appearance of the charms.

The smallest pieces were appreciated for their versatility. The largest pieces were chosen by collectors and three of them (part of a series entitled Harvest) were selected to participate in the exhibition Bigiù in Salerno, Italia.

Having created a complete collection made me curious to continue experimenting and discovering new possibilities, concentrating on the morphology of the necklace.

I incorporated vegetable dyes to add colour to the cotton, mineral pigments to colour the porcelain, and reduction glazes to add shine and shades to the charms. However, such a variety of elements tends to disperse my attention, that's why I always go back to the beginning and dedicate myself to continue creating new designs in white.

Linen is one of my favourite fibres because it sits at the exact point between rustic and sophisticated, a thin line that I always explore in my work.

Orilla (shore) took me back to the memories of shells piled up on the sand by the waves.

From a formal point of view, I wanted to give importance to the textile component with a wide cotton and linen band. It distributes the weight over a larger surface giving lightness to the piece and also works as a visual counterpoint to the porcelain.

The Pétalos (petals) necklace was one of my first designs and I personally enjoy wearing it on all kinds of occasions. I reversed it adding an asymmetry in the combination of charms that gives it a more interesting appearance.

.

Satélites (satellites) is a nod to traditional pearl necklaces.

I decided to compensate the large size of the porcelain beads with more space in the thread, resulting in a set of white shapes that seem to revolve around a centre of attraction that, in this case, is occupied by the wearer's body.

Finally, with Raices (roots), I chose to go in a more abstract direction. However, anyone who has seen a succulent stem take root in a glass of water will be able to understand the image I was trying to capture.

Cylinder beads give it strength, knots add mobility, and cotton threads escape towards the ground.

Story of a factory

I was invited by Verónica Yías from Idearios Potters School to participate in their series of IG talks with ceramicists. She was especially interested in me telling the story of my family's factory, Borghi Porcelana and generously offered me the chance to make a short video to share pictures, facts and anecdotes.

Borghi Porcelana was founded by my grandfather Fermo Borghi and operated from 1953 until its closure in 2010 in Buenos Aires Province. My parents, Cristiano Borghi and Cristina Gargiulo took care of the management of the company since 1974. That was the place where I grew up as a child and learned the different tasks that lead to the creation of decorative porcelain and ceramic pieces.

The video has a hundred historical images of the factory, has audio in Spanish and lasts 25 minutes.

Intuitive sketches
Bocetos intutivos

Sketching from the stain allows the ideas or images that I have in my head to appear little by little instead of forcing them.

Text and Images by: Cecilia Borghi

This image reminds me of chapter XIII of Michael Ende's Never Ending Story about Perilin, the night forest.

I had no plans to draw it, but I read the chapter recently and the image appeared while I sketched. Drawing from the stain is a strategy that always helps me sketch, especially if I feel lost or uninspired.

Lots of blank paper to sketch with ink.

Difficulty starting to stain a sheet (or starting modelling a sculpture, etc.) often resides in not being able to find a starting point. It is usually easier when having a previous sketch and an idea of what we want to achieve with the work to be done. But this way of working does not suit everyone.

In my case, I worked many years from previous sketches that I made in the workshop of the school of fine arts on the days when we had a living model. But I began to realize that if there was no model or I didn't have a photograph at hand to copy, I couldn't draw anything. After some time and many attempts, I found a way of working that was much more interesting to me. I call it intuitive drawing.

Gestural ink stains to begin my intuitive sketches.

In this type of practice, more expressive or free, the lack of a sketch guide implies a commitment to start working without knowing exactly where we are going. But marking a sheet of paper without any preestablished intention usually causes the impression of being about to ruin the support.

In my student days, the solution I found for this problem was drawing on previous works that I had discarded. When I had nothing to start with, I asked my schoolmates if they could let me use their discarded works that they did not want to keep. Eventually, I used new papers that I scribbled with pencil or pastels for an initial stain or patina.

Fujur, the lucky dragon (or Falcor in the film) born from light ink stains.

Then I proceeded to look carefully at those marks trying to imagine something. This exercise is similar to what happens when we look at the clouds and see shapes in them. At first, I had a hard time finding images but with practice, it got easier. When I managed to visualize something I started chasing it with my pencil making marks that then I would add colour.

An important point to find the images is to change the orientation of the paper to lose sight of the previous drawing that is still latent. This action forces the eye to create new relationships between the stains and will spark our imagination.

The silver city of Amarganth with its building towering in fine graphite over the watery ink strokes.

I took advantage of this hack for many years, the only drawback was the lack of quality of the papers I used. It became a problem when it came to framing or selling my jobs.

So today I prefer high-quality papers on which I stain with ink before drawing. Once the marks are made, I let them dry and I then proceed by moving the sheet in different orientations until images begin to emerge. I continue to add details with a pencil before going to colour.

The entrance to Xayide castle. Black graphite rocks fixed in between the interlaced ink lines.

www.ceciliaborghi.com/archivos/?El_gesto_propio.pdf

Gestural drawings (as I call this technique that comes from the stain instead of coming from a specific idea) is the starting point of my sketches, but also a way of connecting with my work when I feel that I'm not inspired. The simple act of scribbling with ink on paper suggests images that gradually become ideas.

Bones and feathers
Huesos y Plumas

Texto e imágenes: Cecilia Borghi y Carolina Salom

Creating a home considering our core values.

Text and Images: Cecilia Borghi and CSalom Atelier

I met Carolina Salom in 2018 in a workshop on natural dyes. We were six women trying to learn the secrets of dyeing textiles with the discards of our kitchens and sharing a beautiful day between talks and homemade food. There I was able to learn a little about the story of Carolina, a cosmopolitan Colombian. After travelling and living in different parts of the world, she chose to settle in Buenos Aires and continue creating, from this South Pole, her textile sculptures.

Today I want to share her latest and most personal project: CSALOM ATELIER in Chacarita neighbourhood (B.A.) that presents a selection of my porcelain necklaces. In her Atelier Carolina displays her interest in interior design and a range of objects and products that perfectly align with her convictions and lifestyle.

In a space organized with simplicity and good taste, she presents her textiles accompanied by handcrafted objects and products for the body and the home that ascribe to the zero-waste way of life. She makes her sculptures sitting at a table on the Atelier window. If we stop on the sidewalk as we pass, we will be able to observe her working with patience and care while transforming the wool into functionalist objects:

“The place where we work every day aims to dignify the trade in a simple way. The making of each piece is exposed to the public to illustrate to them the skills and time put into my practice. CSALOM ATELIER talks about how we relate to the spaces we inhabit.”

She lived in Bogotá, Barcelona and Miami before landing in Buenos Aires. Perhaps those changes were what led her to reflect on her role as an interior designer:

“Although I studied interior design, I could never have dedicated myself to decoration. For me, the way we live has to be the result of a very personal search, not something imposed on us”.

And that's why her workspace also displays a careful selection of everyday objects and products that are sustainable over time and handmade by Argentinian artisans, focusing on textiles.

Carolina chose a selection of my necklaces with porcelain beads that represent feathers and bones. Seeing them in their new context, I can feel the strong coherence with which she builds her world and invites us to share it.

The bones are our inner and primordial structure, the support of our being, as well as our principles and convictions are. And the plumage, that dense and insulating layer that protects birds from the cold and water, presents itself to me as a beautiful metaphor for the home we inhabit, the refuge we build in our own way and according to our needs.

Evocation

In times of fleeting images, stopping to observe and recreate something is making an effort to remember.

Words and images: Cecilia Borghi
Location: Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay - February 2020

I walk looking down at each step, I spy textures and guess roots. I advance looking up to appreciate the layers of peeling paint on the walls, the leaves of the trees, a bird hidden among the branches.

I move my gaze upfront, where sometimes, the lack of horizon is fictitious when I find the street I'm walking on ends in the river.

My memories take shape through my hands, with each pressure of my fingers on the clay, with each effort to extract colour from the vegetables and fix them on the fibres of fabrics.

During this process, the material also leaves its marks on my hands.

The result of the exchange crystallizes in the form of necklaces, porcelain moments threaded in a cord. They evoke the fruits of the earth, the temperament of the water, the transience of the wind.

The thread resembles time, which sometimes stretches and sometimes twists, knots and confuses.

Each necklace is like a souvenir, they give me the possibility of returning to a certain moment or sensation through the reactions caused by a texture.

Textures understood as layers, become veils detached from the parsimony of ancient times.

To evoke is to remember through the senses. Remember: who I am, where I come from, where I am going.

My necklaces feel ephemeral but solid, formed of moments captured in a manual gesture and threaded in the flexible cord of time.

In the simple and rustic essence of the materials that conform them, the secret lights up with the touch of the hand and the soft sound that arises from a simple movement.

I build my porcelain and cotton jewellery as tactile snapshots of my memories. Each piece that I let go, it's like a bottle thrown into the sea.

The eel

The extraordinary is never good for anything, it's just that, the weird, what rarely happens and when it happens it deserves to be seen as a display, but it has nothing in life but the role of illuminating a certain moment of any given day. We remember that the usual is not that, that we should not expect it to happen again, nor to go out to look for it.

For years I had refused to return to that city, but due to different commitments, we were forced to make the trip as a family. I did not want to return because I was scared by the idea of staying in a place whose historic centre and much of the suburbs were destroyed by the earthquakes of 2012. They are still rebuilding it today.

To my surprise, I didn't feel bad once we arrived to stay for a month. The houses are made of wood, the doors have a single lock, the windows have no bars, and the gardens are barely delimited by privets or low flower bushes. It's a place quite different from the city I live in.

I do not know if what chased away my fear was the ratio of gardens per square meter or the tranquillity that is breathed into the semi-deserted streets, where people are mostly transported by car and going on foot is almost an anomaly. A real shame since when walking, the aromas of the flowers invade the spirit and walking becomes almost floating. Passing from perfume to perfume, one enjoys the ignorance of not knowing the names of those fragrant specimens, abandoning oneself to perceive the aromas suspended in the air.

Upon arrival, I took care to find out what I had to do in the event of an earthquake and the answer was unanimous: not to panic, and hide under a table or chair or any other furniture that covered my head. Do not go out and nor stand on the threshold of the door. The days passed smoothly, each the same as the next. At first, I felt a little nervous when I was alone in the morning, but as the days went by I got used to it. If the weather was nice I would go out with my camera to capture images to take with me as a souvenir.

One day I discovered that, just behind the property where we were staying, there was a river. It was inaudible from the house because it was not very large, it looked like a stream, but for some reason, I was disturbed to know that wild water ran so close to me.

I say wild because it was not domesticated and piped, like those streams in the place where I come from, that we only remember the existence of when, during the great rains they overflow and furiously invade the houses, ruining floors and furniture. This one, crystalline and respected in its nature, was invisible, however, as it ran through a long stretch of land that extended at the back of all the houses on the block, transforming the place into a strange area, a sort of invisible territory.

The path by the river, wild and lonely, attracted and disturbed me at the same time. If I walked to the left, I came to the university campus where it was hiding under the ground. If I turned to the right, I reached the main avenue, a perfectly paved road surrounded by gardens on each side. Once I discovered this secret place, I used to stop by daily to see if I could spot a fish and get my best photo souvenir from the trip. But I never saw anything but water and stones. And when I had finally been able to establish a routine and began to believe that certain normality had taken over my life (the days indistinguishable, the river without fish), it happened.

It was almost midnight and we were about to go to bed when a deafening noise began to be heard. It started out smooth, like a truck passing in the street. And it intensified so fast that the windows began to shake and the truck turned into a train that seemed to be about to collide with the house. But there were no lights to confirm the existence of the train and the floor began to move back and forth, the roof was moving in the opposite direction as if the house was rolling on wheels. We were on the train.

The wooden house was shaking with increasing force. The coat hangers hit the doors of the closets but nothing fell because everything was secured to the walls with sturdy hooks and screws. I could not accept that such a thing was happening. We walked as far as we could to the bed, feeling like a drunkard barely able to stand, and we lay there, in the wrong place, breathing hard and unable to think of anything at all, just wishing that those endless two minutes simply passed.

The earthquake, in its physical expression, was a challenge to common sense. The walls and ceiling were contorted in such a way that right angles ceased to exist and the wood and glass curved but did not break. If someone had described something like this to me, I would have considered it an exaggeration engendered by fright. Now I know that nature can manifest in unthinkable ways.

Finally, the earthquake passed, it stopped almost suddenly, only to make its tremor feel again in the form of slight shudders of the ground that repeated every half hour. These reiterations were the aftershocks, slight jolts that can continue to happen for years and are a reminder that the earth is still trying to settle. The house stood up to them all. The next day we learned that what we had experienced was just the echo of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred 500 km away, which had left the epicentre destroyed and isolated.

Life in the city continued as if nothing had happened, because its inhabitants knew firsthand what it was to be the epicentre and this time it had not been their turn. I, however, could not shake the fright and my stomach twisted with fear, the movements, at regular intervals, prevented me from escaping from reality. I had the impression of inhabiting a ship instead of a house.

Finally, I decided to follow the advice of the neighbours and make the effort to resume my daily routine as an antidote against the traumatic moment. So it was that I went out one morning through the back door of the house and passed through the wooden gate that led to the invisible territory. Returning to that solitary place that I already knew so well made me feel a certain relief, as if they were the still-intact vestiges of the world before the earthquake, a place that, although like the rest of the city did not show ravages of the tremors, had the virtue of making me feel safe.

It was this feeling of shelter, perhaps, that led me to get closer to the river than ever before, cautiously descending the slight muddy slope, taking care to step on the grass mounds so as not to slip, and holding onto the thin trunks of young trees that grew with their roots wet, polished by water. Amid my total nonchalance, nature surprised me again.

In the fine, transparent thread of water, furrowed with lustrous stones that seemed to be covered with glitter when the sun managed to pierce through the leaves and deposit its beams of light on the burnished surfaces, I saw an eel swimming, glossy and black, swift, almost fleeting.

I held my breath a moment, doing so in a strange attempt to stop time, so I could observe the animal in my own time. But it didn't work. Not only had it disappeared, swimming with absolute elegance towards the point where the river disappeared underground, but also I hadn't even had time to lift my camera, focus, and steal an image.

It was a beautiful moment, almost an apparition as if what I had observed was a supernatural creature. So many times I had heard of eels in streams and people trying to catch them at dusk to transform them into food and happiness. And this eel was alive, its shiny skin and rapid movements accentuated its vitality and the simple fact that it was a being in total freedom, filled it with splendour, while the ones I had seen in aquariums were still, coiled and piled on top of each other, the skin opaque as dry leather and hidden behind the sign on the edge of the fish tank that read: "danger, keep your hands off."

It was a fleeting instant, it slipped through my fingers and escaped the click of my camera, I had no way to follow the eel along the dirt path despite having tried clumsy movements to get back on the path and catch up to it at the end of the invisible territory, as it sped lithely towards its destination.

I had no one around to share it with, or any way to attest to the experience. And if I'd stopped to think about it, how ridiculous the aspiration was. Not because it was a simple eel in the water but because it had manifested and disappeared in a few seconds, like the earthquake, which had altered my world in such a different way. And the wishes and fears fulfilled do not require proof.

Almost four years have passed since that journey in which I felt so nervous and anxious. And thanks to the distance given by the passage of time, I can say that I keep two valuable memories of that experience: the power of the earth, shaking from its entrails with a beastly force, and the flashing vision of a free being, moving with skill and grace through straits and obstacles, towards absolute freedom.

Using our hands to do things is a way to get in touch with our environment, with the materials that compose and shapes it.

To make is to try to understand the world from the sensory, to awaken the senses to our surroundings.

To make is to become receptive, it is to approach the chosen material paying attention to its limits and possibilities.

Making involves trusting one's own ability to carry out a specific task, to face a challenge, to unravel a problem.

Hacer exige concentración, hacer foco, comprender y tomar decisiones.

Hacer requiere paciencia y lleva tiempo.

Making requires concentration, focusing, understanding and making decisions.

Making requires patience and takes time.

We can make things with our hands or use tools or machinery.

We can create something, intervene in something made by others or start from an industrial product.

In any case, making becomes a direct intervention on a previously existing thing or matter.

What we intervene (a thing, material, place or body) will be marked unfailingly by our subjectivity, which is our way of seeing, expressing ourselves and doing.

While making we leave our mark, trails that reveal our existence.

And it is important to be aware of those traces.

The hands leave their mark and those marks are signs, they are an uncoded language that others can receive.

In doing so, we are already expressing our need to communicate with others.

No matter what we do becomes anonymous, lose our name, because it will always contain a message.

Marks talk about our ideas, commitments and struggles.

Making generates empathy because, in a world where every second matter, we cannot ignore something in which another person has devoted their time and effort.

Making change us, affects our bodies, our existence.

To make is to present our way of seeing the world.

Making is more than saying, it is a fact that expresses a commitment, with ourselves, with others.

To make is to prove that resources are at hand.

Making is a crystallization process in which our physical and mental reactions to the world around us materialize.

To make is to communicate through the senses.

Making is a reaction to apathy, it is a way to overcome the feeling that everything is already made, that there is nothing that can be done.

To make is to sow in others the idea that they can also make something and thus, among us all, change things.

Artificial nature
Naturaleza artificial

An attempt to understand what every day questions me from walls and paths.

Nature as a theme is one of the most worked today from very diverse angles. I do not escape this trend and add to the countless number of people who discover a world in the leaf of a tree.

Naturaleza artificial, ensayo breve por Cecilia Borghi / Artificial Nature, a short essay by Cecilia Borghi

It is sometimes difficult for me to express the meaning of what I am doing, but over the years I discovered some reasons for my choice, despite having started from oil painting and having always felt interested and confident in the representation of the human figure. Put that way, stop painting people to draw or model flowers might sound like a whim. But it happened to me that, in spite of how interesting it can be to represent human beings, the same subject was unattainable and I was losing the desire to paint.

In 2010, during an art clinic with architect Daniel Fischer, we were fortunate to have a special guest to give an opinion on our work. It was the artist and curator Graciela Taquini. After barely observing my porcelain flowers and my work Phoenix on the table sentenced, surely, that my subject was artificial nature. The impact produced by that comment left me thinking, locked in my head to the point that I don't remember anything else that was talked about that day.

Perhaps today seems obvious but I never dismissed her words and instead dedicated myself for a decade to try to unravel the dilemma. The impact that caused me was profound because of the associations that the concept of artificial nature woke up in my head: plastic flowers, zoos, petrol-based materials, all this intermingled in a world of cellophane and pixels.

Nothing could be further away from what I intended, which was ... well, I didn't even know it at the time.

I kept on working on my objects, necklaces, and drawings, and while the years went by some features were increased: the choice of work materials (vegetable inks, cotton, and porcelain), a taste for wood surfaces to work, inspiration found in leaves and sticks collected from the sidewalks and a choice for decorative arts and its manual imprint marked by the beauty of the old and eclectic Buenos Aires buildings.

Naturaleza artificial, ensayo breve por Cecilia Borghi / Artificial Nature, a short essay by Cecilia Borghi

But all this interest in “the natural stuff” was opaque when confronting the world and discovering that I like the sea but the waves terrify me and I am content to get my feet wet on the shore. The jungles and mountain areas make me feel anxious, I would never go camping (I did it before but I never fully enjoyed it). I don't like being near insects unless they are part of a museum display (the same with certain animals). I am distressed to visit places with tsunami risk or earthquakes ... and the list goes on.

As I started spinning these ideas, I began to feel an impostor who presented nature in an idealized way but who fears it and takes refuge in the protective cave of her own house. And even if I had preferred to be wrong, I was making the right deduction.

Nature in all its splendour can be moving, sometimes so intense that it becomes intolerable. That overflow triggers in me all kinds of feelings, from the most absolute happiness to the dread on the opposite extreme.

And although I can have the tools to understand certain natural phenomena, I feel that I do not have the emotional ones, which have been stunted by remoteness and lack of contact.

Naturaleza artificial, ensayo breve por Cecilia Borghi / Artificial Nature, a short essay by Cecilia Borghi

That is why I am satisfied with a withered reflection and thus I visit botanical gardens, parks, and reservoirs where the natural world exists under human control, where natural laws have been subjected to human laws. I travel through these places, striving to imagine that this is a natural reality, free of dangers and threats.

I feel fragile outside my concrete shell, to the point that the wooden houses used to seem to me most unsafe (an issue that I found wrong when passing an 8.5 earthquake in a wooden house that was shaken like a ship but did not suffer even the slightest scratch).

Naturaleza artificial, ensayo breve por Cecilia Borghi / Artificial Nature, a short essay by Cecilia Borghi

(Mark Forsyth 'The Etymologicon' p.12)

What I see surpasses me and I can't understand that feeling. My reaction to misunderstanding seems to be panic, nothing more and nothing less than fear of nature. Panic, the atavistic fear of the unknown, of what dwells in the shadows of uninhabited nature:

Panic is not a fear of everything, it is, in fact, the terror that the Greek god Pan, who rules the forest, is able to induce to anybody who takes a walk in the woods after dark.
(Mark Forsyth 'The Etymologicon' p.12)

Cities are the perfect refuge to avoid panic because they are inhabited by beings similar to us, built to our needs, contemplating our necessities, designed and decorated to make us feel at ease.

These gigantic nests that we have created are complicated and often violent places, but they still give me some security, that of knowing that there are others like me, that there are food and water supplies, that I might find refuge. On the other hand, in nature, I will never know what I will find and if I will have the ability to understand and communicate myself.

So I can explain that my work does not celebrate nature in its purest form, but that its essence is symbolic and represents the search for a path to what we have lost.

It is an attempt to recover it by extracting it from the stone reflections of our cities, from their ornaments petrified in time and the domesticated pavement vegetation.

I look into the insignificant and seemingly invisible to the gaze of the walkers to reveal what escapes us, shake my fear and understand its very essence, first from the senses and later in a rational way.

I was always attracted to the buildings of organic spirit over the elegant architectural rationalism that seems to believe that nature should only be observed through large windows while we take refuge in perfect and neat cubes.

I prefer the decadence of Art Nouveau, the Baroque, and the Rococo. They are artistic movements that understood the latent, dark, tangled, and intimate beauty that still beats within us. Closer to the experience of the curve and the cave, its forms stimulate the imagination, preparing us for the reunion of what we have lost.

But it is not about idealizing the past but walking towards the future in search of the lost balance, rescuing the good things that we left behind while embracing the wonders that new technologies offer us.
